Rowing machines

Gents, my daily exercise regimen is to spend 45-60 minutes on a recumbent bike. Unfortunately, I have gone through 3 bikes in the past 3 years. I have decided to try another means of exercise. Has anyone used a rowing machine for exercise? Tell me the ins and outs of this exercise regimen.

Check out http://www.concept2.com/indoor-rowers/training there is a lot of excellent information here. I also recommend their machines, very well built. These are the machines that gyms use.

Forgot to mention - I personally think the workout is better than a bike because you are working more muscle groups. I have heard folks complain about how boring rowing can be - I don't find it to be boring at all, especially if you are capable of sitting on a bike for an hour each day :biggrin1:

+1 for Concept 2. Its the exact machine the pros and health-clubs use. Its built like a tank, and the workout is minimal impact full body.
The best part is the price. You can get one for around $900.00( a health club quality elliptical or treadmill is around $3000-$7000) and if maintained, it will last a lifetime.

I personally own one myself.

Another vote for the Concept 2. Rowing is boring, but no more so than using a treadmill or a stationary bike. Get a good playlist or position a TV where you can watch it and you'll be fine.

You may get more replies in the clubhouse.

Another vote for concept 2. I suggest interval training mixing rowing with pushups, pullups, squats, presses, lunges. You'll get everything done in one workout.

And another for C2. I don't own one and thankfully the gym I train at no longer has one either (man I hated workouts that had the rower in them). But the quality is fantastic and they stand behind their products.

I dinged up my knees while in the Air Force. Running became less of an option except on an elliptical.

Bikes bored me. We got a rowing machine into the gym. Properly adjusted and preferably, with some music on, you can row for 20-30 minutes and get about the equivalent workout of riding a bike for an hour it seems like. AND work all the other muscle groups. I rowed on the one machine available where I was deployed at and kept in pretty decent shape considering my running was limited.

I really like the look of the C2 models, and have used them (or very similar to them) in the past.

Waaaaay out of my price range these days though!
