Rounding Out My Brush Collection. Maybe

Hello all,

I'm piggybacking off of a thread I started a couple weeks ago:

http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showth...r-Soaps-to-Complement-My-Collection?highlight=

This is the deal. I got an old rubber stamp holder with 10 slots in it to hold my brushes. I've got BAD. You may not believe me when I say this but "I want to stop". :001_rolle But, I want to round out my collection at 10 brushes before I'm done. Now, I am aware I'm not the first guy to talk this way. I'm sure there was a time when many of the guys who have over 40 brushes in their collection thought to themselves "10 should be enough".... but this is different. Well, maybe it isn't.... who knows?? But, for the sake of starting a new thread and deciding on my next two brush purchases.... let's just assume that I'm going to stop at 10 and fill every slot in my holder. :thumbup:

Here is my current lineup:

Rooney Heritage Stubby 1XL

Loft = 46, Handle height = 40, Knot = 25 (Fan)

Simpson Emperor 3 Super 2 Band
Loft = 52, Handle height = 61, Knot = 23 (Bulb)

Edwin Jagger Chrome Bulbous Super 3 Band
Loft = 53, Handle height = 49, Knot = 21 (Fan)

Savile Row 3824 Silvertip 3 Band
Loft = 54, Handle height = 51, Knot = 24 (Bulb)

Morris & Forndran Blonde Badger 2 Band
Loft = 53, Handle height = 49, Knot = 24 (Fan)

Semogue SOC Boar w/ Cherry Handle
Loft = 57, Handle height = 57, Knot = 24

Semogue 830 Boar
Loft = 55, Handle height = 44, Knot = 22

Semogue 620 Boar
Loft = 50, Handle height = 43, Knot = 21

The Semogue 620 is not here yet.... it's on its way. As you can see, I'm not partial to any one brush maker. I like the idea of variety.... but I realize that a few of my brushes are similar in size. What do you guys think I am missing? I'm thinking along the lines of a Thater 4125.... but I'm not sure of the size. Maybe a Kent BK8? Maybe a custom Shavemac? I think I may need a big knotted brush (26+) for facelathering creams.... but not a huge monster. Maybe a Rooney Heritage 2XL or a Simpson Chubby 2? I think I've got all the boars I need..... leaning toward badger hair definitely. Don't need a travel brush because I have an Edwin Jagger travel brush.... even though I didn't list it... mostly because I don't use it and it stays in my dopp kit all the time. I think my current collection pretty much covers all of my needs. I pretty much use soaps and creams equally and face and bowl lather equally.... no preference one way or the other as far as that goes. These last two would be mostly for fun.... something different from what I currently have mostly.

So, what do you guys think?

Ben

Your missing a custom, either a RV or a Farvour would be my recommendation. Both makers have great looking brushes and you can't go wrong with a TGN knot.

WOW, your collection is really coming along and I like your thinking. Different makes, styles, grades, lofts etc.

A Kent would be a welcome addition, as would a Shavemac. My rotation brushes/collection (I use all my brushes) will be complete in the next week or so with 3 brushes en route (T2 2 band, Shavemac Custom and Rooney PL1)

you could definitely use 1 big one 28mm+, a chubby or similar. i have a M&F big monster and it's a treat to use. just make sure it's a soft one and the loft is right

My vote goes to Shavemac. I just got one myself...excellent brush. I used to have a 28mm and it was lovely. The only brush I've ever regretted selling.

Okay, probably my biggest questions regarding a 28mm knot is: 1) what's a good loft height and 2) a fan or a bulb? My thought is a bulb because I have a feeling that a fan shape would just feel enormous. I was just reading through your thread bruce.... on your brush collection journey and I must say that the monster M&F brush of yours caught my eye. Impressive looking brush. I got the M&F brush in my collection yesterday and I've used it twice. I love the backbone and softness of the Blonde Badger. Seems to be quite the lather hog.... but I don't mind that so much. Very luxurious feeling on my face. I'm really loving my boar brushes as well.

I'd like to see pics of those when you get them. Especially the Shavemac Custom and the Rooney.

Every "stable" needs these two brushes in them.

Duke 2

Kent BK8

After those you can have a few more to keep things interesting but these two are my "always at hand" brushes.

for sure. going in to the 2013 Sabbatical shortly, so I had to make a few last minute purchases to fill out a few holes in my small collection. I will update and keep you posted when they arrived (they should all be landing this week)

Thanks. The Kent is definitely one I have considered. The BK12, I am convinced is just too huge for my taste.... so I'm pretty well set on the BK8 if I were to go the route of a Kent.

These are the opinions I'm looking for from you guys with the big collections or have tried out many brushes. What do you consider "must haves". Maybe I've already got it.... maybe I don't.... but I'm interested in knowing what you think. Thanks again!

Ben

Incidently, I just got my Semogue 620 this morning.... so I officially have all of the brushes I listed in my first post. Still haven't tried the 620 yet obviously.... but based on my experiences with the SOC and the 830 over the past week I think I will really enjoy it as a face latherer for hard soaps.

Ben

Let's see a Lineup pic. Maybe easier for some of us to suggest based on appearance. I am not good with visualizing brushes...

It seems that you are missing a horse and a synthetic. That would definitely complete the variety. Hee hee.
Good luck and nice collection, so far.

Well, from another thread I started just before this one regarding Thater 2 band brushes..... I'm thinking that the Thater for me may be the 4125/2 2-band with a bulb shape. I'm not saying I am going to get a Thater yet..... but it's been on my radar from day one when I decided to order my Rooney which was my first brush (besides my travel brush). I think the Thater would fit into the collection very nicely being a slightly larger knot (around 26mm I think) and a handle height and loft height a little stouter than most of my other brushes.

Ben

A Thater for sure. If you want large, try the 4125/6. Alternatively, maybe one of their wooden handles? Same great hair, but a more exotic handle.

How about a Vie-Long horse, or horse and badger mix? One of the LE's from BG would be a fine addition.

Okay guys, here are pics:
