Rosehip Oil as aftershave

Don't pretend you didn't read shaveblog. Sounds interesting and could be a good cheap aftershave option or nightly moisturizer. Has anyone here heard of this or better yet tried it? A quick google on this brought up quite a few positive remarks.

Enlightenment,

I don't have to pretend, because I genuinely don't. I find the opinions on shaving here to be just as valid (if not more so), and they typically aren't anywhere near as.... verbose.

As to the subject of the thread, makes sense to me. Roses are chock full of all sorts of beneficial properties. The way I get my rose is in the form of 50/50 rose/lavender hydrosol blend (da Vinci water). I doubt it's the be all end all. If there were an after shave panacea, we'd all be using it already.

Define cheap. I recall buying rose hip oil at Whole Food about a year ago and I believe it came to about $1 per millilitre. That's Penhaligon territory.

Never much cared for it. Way too greasy, and hard to apply. More gets on your fingers than your face. His "other" recommendation is much better, in terms of efficacy and price. My 100ml bottle of Hobocare jojoba (a whopping 8 bucks) is practically full after a year's use, and unlike oil will not go rancid. Now that it's getting warm, I probably won't touch it until next December.

Well, guys I read Shaveblog occasionally and every once in a while I try some of Corey's "finds." I've also traded with him on a few occasions and he's a decent guy as far as that goes.

I won't pretend that I follow his every word, but in this hobby/addiction - EVERYTHING is relative to how well it works for you. That said: I've found the best stuff on the planet (for my face) on boards just like these. Since I really like jojoba oil I just ordered an 8oz. bottle of rose hip seed oil for $8.28.

It's on "March Special" at www.mountainroseherbs.com

I'll buy Penhaligon's all day at those prices! :001_rolle

nice, i'll order some and maybe some clay while i'm at it.

i read shaveblog, it has some interesting stuff in it, nothing you can't find reading the boards, though.

I enjoy reading shaveblog. It certainly isn't my bible, but it is entertaining and occassionally helpful.

I recently purchased some jojoba oil and have really enjoyed it. I wish that I'd found it back in November when my face started to get really dry. Next on the list will be some rose hip seed oil (thanks for the link Howard).

Well all -

I've been using this oil as part of my aftershave/moisturizing regimen for about a week now.

Do I like it? Yes and no (but mostly YES!)...

While it was certainly a good value (see earlier posts), per the vendor, it should really be kept in the refridgerator. For me, that poses a significant issue as the 'fridge is a floor and the length of the house away from where I shave.

A little REALLY goes a long way. This stuff doesn't work like jojoba at all. It is fairly thin in consistency (maybe a tad bit thinner than jojoba) but really "sits" on your skin for HOURS if you let it. The vendor gave instructions that you use a small amount, massage it in with your fingertips, and then blot the excess off with a facial tissue. HEED THIS ADVICE!!

First time I used it, I didn't read the instructions that close (about blotting). So, not only did I use too much (so it ran all over my hand and literally coated my palm and between my fingers), but I didn't blot it.

By lunch time my shirt collar was SOAKED from the residual oil on my neck! :crying: Not only did it look GROSS whilst wearing a tie, it made me entirely too self-conscious while at work (I train/coach salespeople).

Once I realized what I did wrong, I started over the next day. I applied not even a dime size "spot" to my fingertip and went to town. After a few minutes, I took a Kleenex and blotted my face. It really did make all the difference! My face is nice and moisturized and it does seem to be working on the few scars that I have from ingrown hairs, etc, along my jaw line.

I'm still trying to decide if it would work for me as a replacement for my (tons of) other moisturizing aftershaves. At this point, I say NO!! Used in conjunction with them, however, I am getting great results. The best part for me is that it really does seem to be healing my skin.

As with all things of this nature, YMMV.

Hey Howard,

It looks as though you and I have come to a nearly identical conclusion on this product.

I plan on using it for a few more days before hitting the review section to post my findings.

Well, Kyle -

I suppose that's a good thing, then!

This morning I used it after a few sprays of Em's place cucumber A/S splash and Proraso pre/post.

You would not believe how incredible soft my face STILL is, some 6 hours later!

As an a/s moisturizer, I've used it in conjunction with the Hydrolast products, the Proraso line, and as a solo player. This morning I combined it with with jojoba oil & CAR's hydrosol, and then finished up with a dusting of shave talc. As a result, I am finding it quite difficult to type with one hand as the other is continually fondling my supple face.

Wow - I was doing the same thing all through church!!! My wife actually whispered to me to "stop feeling your cheeks!"

I'm STILL "face-sturbating!" :a39:

I little dusting of talc does seem to be really nice with that oil (I used some Gold Bond the other day and it was cooling and gave a great result!).

I tried the Rose Hip Seed oil from Mountain Rose twice. Applied it as thinly as possible (didn't blot though) and by the third day was starting to see breakouts. I stopped and went back to using the CAR A/S and they went away.

I'll try it again using very, very little AND blotting and see if that makes a difference. If I start to break out again, it's history.

how would you compare the texture and oily-ness of it to pre shave oils? I've only tried AOS pre shave oil but washing that off my hands was annoying

Despite all of its purported benefits for the skin, I, like Cliff, occassionally break out from it. At this point, I've stopped applying it directly to the skin. Rather, I mix a few drops into my multitude of homemade concoctions.

Trouble is, every time I come up with a world-beating, Harris/Trumper knockoff, I forget the recipe.

My best results have come from using this stuff as a complement to another product or two (or even three). I have enjoyed mixing a couple of drops with an equal portion of jojoba oil. I will usually follow the application of this pairing with an additional product or two.

The only breakout problem I have had with this product occurred when I got a little overzealous with the thickness of the application. Even then, my temples and forehead were the only casualties.

I don't use shave oil anymore, haven't for a long time now. However, when I first started I used some and this is real similar in texture. My skin seems to drink in the CAR A/S but this stuff seems to sit there for a long, long time. But depending on your own skin YMMV.

Hi everyone - I too have followed Corey's advice and starting using Rose Hips Seed Oil - that I purchased from http://mountainroseherbs.com

I didn't notice anything about having to keep this stuff in the fridge however?

Anyway - I mix a few drops of Lavender, Rosemary and Peppermint EO's to the stuff and it smells a lot better. I only use this at night as I think there are better post shave products like Dr. Harris Milk to cool and calm post shave irritation. I do think as a mosturizer the stuff works great!

Wow,a six year old post! Here is the information profile for Rosehip seed oil.

http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/learn/oilprofile/rosehiporganic.php

Rosehip seed oil is the rage in all HIGH price women's moisturizing products along with meadowfoam seed oil. I have a lady friend that at one time worked for a major cosmetic company. She is pretty knowledgable about the active ingredients used in moisturizers and skin care products. Rosehip seed oil is one she uses and recommended for me to use as a moisturizer. I have been using it for a year. For me it works great. It has a two year use date when stored in the refridgerator.

From my experience 5 drops is far to much to use. I use one drop of rosehip seed oil with a drop of avocado oil another great moisturizing oil she recommends. I don't notice any odor from either so I skip any essential oils for fragrance. It is the only moisturizer that I use. I live in the northeast and have had no problems with dry skin in the winter.

I have used jojoba oil in the past. This combo of rosehip seed oil and avocado oil is less greasy and absorbs more readily, just don't overdo it. A little works great and more is not better.
