Rooting Motorola Droid

Hi gents,

OK - I've had this phone for only about a day now, but I'm on the fence as to whether or not to root the thing. Android 2.2 is *allegedly* slated to be pushed to the Droid later this month, so I am thinking about holding off on rooting the phone until then BUT I'm not really sure if I do root if it will give me any benefit. And I don't want to brick my phone.

Anyone running a rooted Droid and have any advice/recommendations?

Thanks,

- ice

I'm on the same page, but I've had my Droid for about six months now. I know that rooting will make the phone faster and certain settings can be adjusted to give you a snappier phone in general.

It is a bit of a hassle, and you need to know what you're doing. I have a few friends who have rooted their phones and they like the results, but I'm a bit squeamish about it still.

If they do update July 13th, you might not get the update that day. When I got my phone I was told that they only update so many phones every day to not over load the system. I don't know if it was just for the first update I got or if it would be like that for all of them. So when it does come out do not get discouraged if you don't get a message the first day. I think the first update I got was about a week after they started rolling it out.

CM 5.0.8 (2.1) was pretty damn good in comparison to the Sapphire 0.62 (2.2) that i having been running for about a week. Apparently CM 6 (2.2) an sapphire 0.7 (2.2) are out now.

The root allows some overclocking, a couple of tweaks to the video and camera, screenshots and some other stuff .. previously running a rooted phone was the only way to previously run the enhanced google apps back when 2.0.1 was on the droid. 2.1 runs most of those apps, rooting allows some tethering, some enhanced coding, etc.

I suggest keeping your eyes open to forums (xda-developers.com) and youtube for anyone who has rooted successfully. I have the grandfather of them all, the G1. I really want to upgrade to a newer phone, but instead extended the life of the phone by rooting it and installing Cyanogen Mod.

However, from what I've seen from 2.2, it supposed to be some kind of wonderful. You may just want to hold off and wait for the push to your phone.

Sorry I don't have a Droid to give you better advice from experience. I do know that I spent the better part of a weekend rooting and tweaking.

Good luck!

I have a Milestone, the name Droid is only used in the US due to the huge license fee it costs to use the name Droid (Lucasfilm own the term) but its basically the same phone.

I've rooted it twice, the first time I forgot to turn off over the air updates and it went and updated itself and wiped my root user access so I had to do it again, I am currently running it rooted with standard Android 2.1 For me it was more about limited functionality overseas, things like access to paid apps on the marketplace or being able to use Google Navigation were not available in Oz, plus being able to get the standard apps off of the phone has been another advantage I got rid of all the preinstalled stuff I didn't use like Motorola Navigator (Europe only GPS not real handy down here) and Facebook.

And burbs a big shout out to the G1! (Its called the Dream over here) That phone had the absolute best keyboard of any phone I ever used.

The thing to remember is once you root the phone you will have to wait for a cracked version of the firmware to become available and a lot of the work for Android is coming from Cyanogen who is pretty much only focusing on the HTC phones. There is definitely a decent sized community supporting the Droid/Milestone though.

It all comes down to how much you want the phone to do whatever you want that requires rooting, for me it was worth it though.
