What's new

Rooney Heritage Stubby 3XL.

I just ordered a Rooney Heritage Stubby 3XL from Vintage Blades. It was a major impulse buy to say the least. What I am wondering is what have I gotten myself into? Anybody have experience with this line of brushes?

I don't have a Rooney yet.
I suspect your brush to be a luxury-class, large knot, short handled masterpiece...in essence, the penultimate "chubby."

You won't be disappointed. It takes about 10-15 shaves for the knot to break in. At first, the backbone is almost too much and hogs lather a bit, but when the brush comes into its own its worth it.

I just got mine a few days ago and so far I'm really liking it.Right now it's between the Shavemac,2 band,d01 and the Semogue SOC 2 band in backbone. Not as scritchy as the Shavemac was before it was broken in.The tips are getting softer as it gets more use.I'm doing one day on and one day off face lathering.Today I used it with Mama Bear's Rosemary Mint (stick) and got lots of lather.I dont think it will get as soft as a Thater 2 band but it is starting to show signs of gel like tips.I just got a new camera so as soon as I can get thru the instuction manual I'll post some pic's.

I have the M&F version courtesy of vocalistbob. You owe it to yourself to face lather with it. It's decadent. If you head shave its nirvana. Enjoy.

I think you got yourself a big, huge, dense wonderfully soft brush that all of your other brushes will be jealous, and possibly scared of. Don't be surprised if your other brushes start spontaneously shedding. :a48:

It's a big brush. I rubbed my nose and part of one ear off with it. It also ate the dog one night while we were asleep. Get a deadbolt for the outside of the bathroom door.

You have now fallen down the rabbit hole of big, dense, brushes that will lead to oh so many more in the future!

Be careful - you may fall as deep into that hole as I have. Here's a pic of a monster 35mm x 63mm "Chubby-style" brush made with a D01 Shavemac 2-band knot that I just bought from Rudy Vey. I'm guessing the break-in period will be about two years!

Thanks gentlemen. You have helped with the buyers remorse (the thing cost more than my other brushes combined!) I am very excited to get my hands on it. How does it compare with the Simpson Chubby line?

It is very similar to the Simpson Chubby 3 in 2-band. I like the Simpson better, but the Rooney is a 1st class brush all the way. The Chubby 3 in 3-band is denser and the Manchurian is both denser and has a stiffer (but not unpleasant) backbone.

I struggle a bit with the XL series. I have a 1XL from the first "gel like" batch but while not unpleasant on the face it seems like a wall of hair with poor flow through... My Chubby 2, though equally as dense, gives up the lather easier. Some of the discomfort may also be from the different knot shape. I prefer a bulb over the extreme fan of the XL. I also own the Rooney Stubby 1 with the "gel like tips and it sees more use as it is less dense.

Hey Dan,

I have two Rooney Stubby 3XL's that I bought from Jim at V. Blades. I can say, without doubt, they are the best performing and most outstanding brushes I own. And I have a lot of brushes including various Simpson Chubby 2 and 3's. I can't imagine you'll be disappointed with your purchase. But one word of caution though. Do not be shocked by the 'feel' of the hair when dry. After you wet these Stubbies, their hair becomes smooth as silk. No kidding. I can't explain why however.
