Rooney 3/1 Super brush

Yesterday I received a package from Vintageblades. Inside was a red box with a sticker on it saying that Jim picked this out for me. I unwrapped the packaging and inside I saw my new Rooney style 3 size 1 super silvertip with a faux ebony handle. Wow, this thing looks beautiful. I rubbed my hands over the top to feel the hairs and it's softness.
This morning I had my first shave with this brush. My previous brushes were a Burma Shave Brush and a Van der Hagen deluxe shave brush. They both served me very well and I am glad that I learned how to make lather with them. But wow this Rooney 3/1 super is leagues beyond my 2 previous brushes. I noticed that the lather just exploded in a short amount of time. My other brushes would take about a two minutes or more until I get my lather right. Then when I put my new loaded brush to my face, I felt the soft tips of the brush. From reading the forums about badger hair, I always read how soft these brushes were but wow, I can honestly say that my shavings in the morning will be heavenly with this new brush. I actually massaged my face with this brush for a while when I shaved, it was so soft when compared to my previous brushes. :c9:
I noticed that the Rooney 3/1 super brush holds a lot more water than my 2 boar brushes. It is also a lot denser. I like the feel of the handle in my hand, it is just the right size for me.
I would highly recommend this brush to others. I've been DE shaving for about 2 months now and this brush is great. I've been using a boar brush and soap/cream for the past 2 years and finally today, I experienced the feel of a Rooney 3/1 Super brush. :w00t:

You have the best brush for the buck that I am aware of. Rooney size 1 styles 1 and 3 are similar. Never held a style 2.

I'm sure there are better (e.g. Rooney finest) but someone must really want that little extra Badger upgrade to pay so much extra money for it. If money were no object I'd give it a try.

And there are others I like less that cost more.

My favorite brush is my Simpson 3/2 Super. Great brush for bowl lathering. I face lather with it too. Just have to squeeze the base of the knot to make it a little firmer. Can't beat this thing for the price.

Jim from Vintage Blades is a great guy, enjoy the new brush! Rooneys are some of the best brushes out there.

I have three brushes and use my Rooney 3/1 in super more than the other two combined. It's unbeatable for face lathering soaps. It's the reason I don't have more brushes; I can't imagine something better.

Even though it's not a bargain priced brush, I think it represents a tremendous value. I have it in super silvertip with a faux ebony handle.

Does anyone have this or another Rooney in the pure badger or best badger grades? If so, have you had the chance to compare the less pricey grades of badger to super silvertip?

I've been using Rooney 3/1 Pure for about a week now. The hairs are pretty scratchy (prickly) compared to the Super. I shampooed and conditioned the brush several times and that has helped soften the hairs. I see the 3/1 Pure almost like a C&E BBB with the same density but with a shorter loft. The Rooney Super Silvertip is very dense and the Pure is about average for a badger brush.

I have a stubby in pure and a 1/1 in super. The pure is a bit more scrubby and the super dense and soft. The pure is softening up the more I use it. I like them both for different reasons I suppose. The pure if my face has a couple days of growth on it and feels like I need a good scrub. The super if I have short hair growth and just feel like pampering my face. Sometimes... I build up lather with both. Use the pure for the first two passes and then the super for the remaining passes.

It's been a couple weeks now with the brushes and they are both starting to soften up but they are keeping their respective properties

Newb question on the Rooney brushes. When folks refer to one as a "3/1," how does that translate to the models I see on (for example) the classicshaving Rooney page?

I'm assuming 3/1 means "Style 3/Small," but I'd like to know if that's right or not.

Thanks!

Yes, 3/1 means style three, size one (one being the smaller of the three sizes).

The Rooney 3/1 is my favorite brush.

The Rooney 3/1 is my favorite brush.

It seems like a very good value, so I'm considering it as my upgrade from the Vulfix 2197, which has been good so far, but reading more about brushes has me wanting an upgrade in bristle quality.

Not to hijack the thread, but do you gents who have Rooneys in both pure and super find any difference in lathering soaps? I'm using a fairly large Penworks brush, 24mm in their finest badger. It works great with creams, but I'm thinking it might be a little large (and floppy) for soaps. So I'm thinking I need something smaller. The question is what ...

my19,
I like using my Stubby Pure with Pre de Provence.
I like using my 1/1 Super with Tabac.

The PdP is a harder soap than the Tabac from my experience. I have only used 3 soaps ever so I might not be the best judge on that. It is not a huge difference in lathering soaps. I think the Pure, being a little stiffer than the super, has been better with harder soaps for me.

you could always get both... It's really hard to go wrong with either. If I had to pick one though, it would be the super. Price is a little more, but I think I like it well enough that I wouldn't think about buying another brush for a while.
