I'm a face latherer who uses soaps & shaves only his neck. My current brush is a pure badger Vulfix 850, which has a low density and lacks a backbone, or at least that's what I suspect, other than a VDH, it's the only brush I've used.
Rooney brushes seem to be highly regarded and the prices reasonable, so I've been looking (lusting?) at them. After reading this site, it would seem like Best Badger will suit me just fine, in fact, it may even be preferable. It also seems that a stiff backboned brush, with a lower loft, smaller knot diameter would match well with my use of soaps, face lathering, & relatively small shaving area. Conclusion: Rooney 1/1 (48 mm loft version) in best badger would fit me best.
My concerns: the Rooney 3/1 looks beautiful (the 1/1 looks very nice, don't get me wrong) and I wonder if the 1/1's handle is too small (my fingers are on the stubbier side, so I doubt that it is). The disadvantage to the 3/1 is that the loft, at 55 mm, seems higher than the ideal, unless I were to purchase it at Vintage Blades, but then I would have to choose between pure badger & super silvertip. I'd probably go with the latter. On that note, I hear a lot of talk about Rooney's silvertips, but not a lot about their best badger. Is there a reason why? Do I assume correctly that their best badger brushes are great brushes?
All in all, my gut & head says, go with the Rooney 1/1 in best badger. Am I thinking straight?
