Rookie looking for advice

Hi, I've been wet shaving for a few months now and have gotten pretty good with a DE and finally enjoy the "chore" of shaving.
I recently orderd a few things from WC shaving and saw a parker disposable staright. Figured "what the hey" i'll get it and try it out.
Well, I've been getting better and better shaves with it over the past two weeks. I can actually shave better with it than with some of my DEs. I think its a blade angle thing.
I assume shaving with a real straight razor is a world apart from this cheap little device with half of a double edged blade clamped in it.
Should I go ahead and invest in a real razor before I learn bad habits using this disposable?

Parkers are great. Keep using it.

AND go out and buy a straight razor or two (likely 10 or more before you know it...), a strop, etc, etc....

Go for it, get an affordable straight and you won't regret it. I'm more afraid of shavettes than I ever was of straights.

Nice to hear of your success. And keep in mind that you are using a real straight, its just one where you change the blade instead of having to sharpen and hone the blade. You shave with the Parker the same way as a regular straight. The biggest difference between the regular and the disposable blade straight is that the regular will never be as sharp as your disposable blade straight. If you want to try and compare between the two by all means do so, but don't fall for that old hype that the disposable blade straight is not "a real straight". It is, and either one is still an open blade razor. I learned straight shaving on on the Feather AC RG, and have been using disposables for about 3 years. I have all the Feathers, the Kai's, and all the Parker's. After learning on the Feathers, I tried regular straights, and gave them a good shot, but IMHO the regulars can in no way match the shave of the disposables.

You know Paul I can get my kamisori preeeety close to an AC blade. I would say MOST regular straights aren't as sharp as a Feather.

The only problem is you have to hone yer own as very few "pay to hone" guys will devote that much time getting your blade up to speed.

I too started with the parker shavette and had pretty good success with that, then I finally made the jump to regular straight razors via the whipped dog deal. I found that shaving with a "normal" straight razor was much easier...its all the same mechanics but I believe the sharpness of the disposable blades gave me much more aggressive shaves especially since I was still learning angle and pressure etc.. All this to say keep it up with the parker and you should look forward to a regular straight. the shavette is a good teacher and you should have no problem with a normal straight if/when you make the transition
