Rolls Razor ?

A friend gave me this the other day as he had no use for it. Has anyone used one or is it just nice to keep for old time sake? Seems in VG condition with all the paperwork that came with it. Model is the Viscount.

They can be excellent shavers after a little bit of work. Check out the Rolls social group and the article on the wiki on refurbishing the Rolls. :001_smile.

If your strop is fairly flat and pliable, your hone is not cracked, and your blade has a decent edge with no chips, dents, or pitting, you have a shaver. These razors shave rather nicely and they are fun to hone or strop. I have one and I use it occasionally.

A liberal application of neats foot oil or some other leather dressing would be a good idea. if the strop is hard or dry, work some more in daily until it is pliable again, and from then on give it some more once every couple of months.

Do NOT lubricate the shaft that runs crossways across the case! What I mean is the part that rides on this shaft, to which the blade is attached. This thing relies on friction to press the blade against the hone or the strop when that shaft is turned by the gear rack in the side of the case. This is important!

Try not to slam the blade against either the hone or the strop. This will take some practice.

Strop that rascal up and give yourself a shave with it! If stropping is not enough, give it a couple dozen strokes on the hone and then strop. These razors shave pretty good so it would be a shame to never ever use it.

You forgot to mention read the nearly mint directions that came with the razor. I had fun reading the directions on the one set I have.
