Road Trip Finds

I just took a road trip to Roswell and Carlsbad Caverns from Austin. Along the way I stopped at some thrift and antique stores and picked up a few things.

First up, I found an aluminum 1970 Travel Tech in a leather snap case. It looks like it was never used as it still has the paper insert in place of the blade and the original blade package is unopened. It's pretty generic but the price was right and the razor condition was mint. The case is in bad shape though because the leather is splitting/breaking from dryness at the bends.

Next, I found a pack of NOS Gillette Super Stainless Blades. Again, unopened and the price was right.

Third, I found this at an Antique store in Roswell. It is a stamp plate of some sort so the writing is reversed. My guess it that it fits onto a printing press and was used for advertising in newspapers. This is by far my favorite find! :biggrin1:

Finally, I found a Merkur 33C in excellent condition for an incredible price! I have a 34C and like it but this was worth it just for the different handle.

P.S. I also saw a cool gimmicky wind-up vibrating DE razor that looked like it would fit any 3 piece head. It had a black plastic body with metal windup key and pushbutton switch. The head had a plastic base plate with a metal cap. It worked and I would have bought it if I had the money or maybe if I hadn't found that stamp plate. I think they wanted $45 for it.

Oh, I love those, too. That's exactly what it is -- a print cut for an ad that would have been used in letterpress printing. From the ad itself, I can tell you that it would have been from the early '50s. It would have originally been attached to a block of wood that would have been sized to make sure that it was set at the proper level for the entire job.

I've got a small collection of Gillette cuts of my own. I really need to get around to taking some more pictures of them, but here are a couple that do have uploaded already. (I flipped the one for the Slim, obviously, to make it easier to see what the print would have looked like.)

And here's a cool old vocational video on letterpress printing, if you're interested in seeing the sort of environment that these would have been used in.

Wow! I have not really seen any of these plates before. I'm glad I bought it. I really need to make a display case for all the razors and stuff I am acquiring.

If you could get some ink and paper and print me a few, I would gladly trade you some blades or a stick of Arko! I have some cased super speeds amd it would look perfect with them.

Advert plates? Oh No! I've never seen one and now I got to find and have one. Darn you all!!

Those things are way cool!

Those Stamping adverts are very cool. Love to find something non razor related but related to Gillette...if that makes sense. Cool find OP.

I'm not sure I want to defile it with ink. It looks pretty clean. Anyone know what I could use that would clean off easy? I have definitely thought of making myself a print or two on some old paper or something.
