She was perfect as as Olive Oyl in Popeye, and her portrayal of confusion and terror in The Shining was amazing. I've read that it was emotionally draining for her, and that Jack Nicholson told her "I don't know how you do it".
Her childrens series work is great if you get a chance to see any of them.

I am a fan of a channel on Youtube that mainly reviews cult films and B-movies. Their most popular videos are called "Best of the Worst" and for many years now their fans have spoken of something called "The Curse of the Worst". Basically, whenever they release a retrospective of an older movie, the lead actor drops dead a few weeks later. It happens disturbingly frequently.

I always think of her in The Shining and had never seen this, but you are absolutely right. She was perfect! RIP.

She was quite the indie darling in her day, and a favorite of Robert Altman's too. I hadn't heard about her much recently and she kind of dropped off my radar. Very sad news indeed.

I get the kind of criticism of campy films, but I give her aces for trying to portray a character older than Popeye, first published in 1910, and in the movies since 1933.
Can you imagine trying to fill the shoes of an iconic character that's been around longer than any living person on earth?
That's pressure!

I think in this instance the criticism comes from a place of affection. They think it's interesting because it's full of odd studio / directorial choices, but they don't tend to do "re:View / re:Visit" commentaries for movies they actively dislike. And certainly they have nothing but praise for Duvall. Rightly so!
