RIP General Chuck Yeager

General Yeager was 97 years old.

The example of calm cool and collected when things went wrong in the cockpit, Yeager was the prototype for modern pilots both military AND civilian.

I love the scene in The Right Stuff, when he's taking the F-104 out for a spin. The guys in the Tower are trying to figure out if it's an authorized test. After some quick back and forth, they all agree that it has to be authorized . . . after all, it's Chuck Yeager.

One of my favorite Yeager tales, from his auto biography, he tells of taking smaller bombers out for "flight tests", and spotting deer. They would land on the nearest dry lake, pop a deer and haul it back to Edwards. Try that in today's USAF. His book made the early days at Edwards sound like a bunch of cowboys in the old west.
