Revisiting Edge shaving gel.

After this morning's shave with Tabac, I decided to try to whip up some lather with some old Edge shaving gel I had lying around, just for kicks. I squirted a bit into my shaving mug - about the amount of Proraso cream I can whip into enough rich lather for about five passes. My first impression was "Wow, this stuff stinks!" Having used Proraso and Tabac exclusively for the past two months made me realize what a bad product Edge is.

I soaked the badger brush and started whipping. And whipping. And whipping. Nothing but a thin film coating the inside of the mug. Certainly, nothing I would ever try to shave with. So I squirted some more in the mug and whipped again. OK, a little bit of lather but maybe enough to shave my chin with. I kept adding more and more gel until I finally was able to whip up enough for probably a marginal two-pass shave. I'd estimate that I used about ten times the amount of Proraso I normally use. I ran the brush over my hand to sample the slickness of the lather. Decent but nothing compared to Proraso or Tabac. Probably not even as slick as a bar of Dove soap.

I can't believe I use to shave with this stuff...:thumbdown

When I first started using a brush again, back in the Fusion days, I used to use the Aveeno Gel with a an Omega Pro Boar. I would soak the brush, and then squirt some gel on the end of the brush and proceed to face lather. I actually got pretty decent shaves using this method. At least that's how I remember it...

Out of all the canned goops and foams, Edge Gel worked the best back in the dark days before the great awakening.

I've tried it since, and it still works well.

Of course, Cheez Whiz works on crackers pretty well, but for some reason I pass it up and go straight to the Jarlsberg, or something else a little more authentic and less Cheez Whizzy.

Before I started DE wet shaving, I used cartridges and a brush. I always put some gel into the bristles of the wet brush and lathered my face with it. The lather was always good, but dry. I like Proraso much better using the same technique.

Several years ago I still had a can of Edge Gel in my travel shave kit. Since I retired I did not have to travel much and the Edge was 4-5 years old. I wondered if it was still any good. I had a cake of Williams (the new stuff) in a mug. The Williams did an OK job but left my face a little dry. I had been reading about super lathers and when I discovered the Edge Gel still squirted out of the can, I gave a shot of it into the Williams mug. I whipped up a lather and shaved with it. It suprised me that I got a BBS shave with the combination. The Williams/Edge was slicker together and did not dry my face. The razor glided across the skin and performed better. It worked so well I continued to used up the Edge. I contemplated buying some more Edge, but got a Michaels Wool Fat instead.

I never did finish the Williams cake. I acquired a cake of vintage Colgate and found that it also dried my face. I decided to blend the Williams/Colgate and a cake of Kels Alovera with the ground up Williams/Colgate soap. I heated up the Kels in a microwave and mixed in the ground up soaps. I made agreat lather that I still use to this day.
