*Review* Bullgoose Natural Horse Hair Vie-Long

This has to be the best thing to come from a horses hind end.

Pros: Attractive design and very ergonomically friendly. Comes with stand.

Cons: Natural smell but that does not bother me as it fades over time.

Price: 10
Won in Bullgoose B&B contest. Can't beat that price.

Quality: 9

Density: 9

Stiffness of tips: 9

Softness of tips: 8

Ergonomics: 10

Latherability: 8

I recommend this brush. Again thanks to Phil and to all the gracious comments from my fellow contestants. I love the 'scritch' over that of my Omega Boar 48 Pro. I find I prefer this smaller brush over the 48. I am a face latherer and this exfoliated quite nicely and was more manageable in lathering. I used Arko shave stick and a dollop of C.O. Bigelow cream this morning.

DISCLAIMER: I have never used a badger or synthetic.

I have yet to try a horse hair that had soft tips

I think I have whatever is the opposite of sensitive skin so I guess it is relative. I would say it is definitely 'scritchy' but I do not have anything else to compare it to besides a boar. I imagine if it doesn't make me bleed I call it soft. It is only the second brush I have ever used. I find reviewing things is not my specialty. :001_smile

August,

Thanks for your fine review.

Over time you'll find that the tips of your horsey brush will continue to soften becoming significantly softer. At one time I owned one of the Vie-Long Barbershop brush. Having more tail hair (and a much less luxurious handle) than your brush, it was initially prickly but softened up nicely. I eventually sold it on BST and almost immediately missed the brush.

I hate to say it, as I'm usually not that unabashedly negative, but this was the worst brush I'd ever owned and used.

Not scritchy, but scratchy and needle like. Fantastic handle. Lather creation was fine, similar to a boar. Downright uncomfortable to use, and it didn't soften up. I now have no desire to retry a horsehair brush.

Glad it works for you and others though! :biggrin1:

Nice review August, I have the VL natural brush and am in love with it and I only have a few shaves with it. Guess I'm like you and love the scrub and some scritch. that's why there so many brushes. Love the beehive handle, may have to get RV to make me one.

Glad to see that BGS is offering these again. My 2012 edition saw action this morning. Great handle, and the knot lathers well. The hair was prickly for quite a while, but eventually broke in.

Already noticed softening of the tips on second day of use. Really like how the handle feels when lathering up.

Great review. I have one myself, and have been breaking it in and trying it out for the past week. I really like it, and may write a review of my own when I feel it's fully matured, so to speak. I also own the 13061B, 13800, and 04312 pro. Aside from the handle - which is fantastic, btw - it's already my favorite of the bunch.
