What's new

Restored a Famex 6/8 Razor (Wald-Solingen) (#2 of 4)

There's something special about this razor.

Not sure where the scales came from but they gotta go.

Sanding 220-400

600-1000 and what will be its new scales

I peened it and then realised the tang was crooked. When fully opened in the shave position it would not close again properly without hitting the scales.
I took it apart again and clamped it in a vise with two peening rods to straighten it out enough to remedy this problem.

Back together now and looking good, it's smoother looking in the flesh

Hone time
I set the bevel on a 1.5k Shapton and it took no time at all to get a bevel going. About 5 mins for a primary and 15-20 just to make sure it was the whole way from heal to toe.

Instead of going through a progression, which I will do at some point, I went straight to a Shohonyama Ozuku with light slurry. I only spent about 10 mins on the Ozuku and I will return to finish it properly but impatience got the better of me and when it was popping arm hair with ease I took it for a test shave on a 4 days growth.

Although the honing is far from complete it performed superbly and I can wait to see what it's like with a full hone.

I love small bevels and this thing is tiny. If you consider one of the lines on this mat is a fraction of a mm it'll give you an idea of how small the bevel is. I can still see some of the 1.5k scratches in there so when they're gone this will be one of my best razors.

Spine = 5.48
Width = 18.77
Bevel angle = 16.79 (This is only my second razor in the sweet sixteens and you'd know it from the shave)
