Replacement for AOS Puck.

Today I hit bottom on my puck of AOS sandalwood tallow soap in the wooden bowl. While I have loved the smell and performance, I am not sure that I want to replace the puck with another from AOS, especially since they raised the price and changed the formula. So, does anyone know which brands of quality hard soap will fit nicely into the AOS wooden soap bowl? While I am aware that I can always mold one of the softer soaps into the bowl, I am really looking for information as regards the various hard/triple-milled soaps on the market. I appreciate your help.

I thought I read somewhere that DR Harris pucks fit quite nicely in the AOS bowls but maybe someone else can deny or confirm this. DR Harris is one of the best (if not the best) triple milled soap out there!

I like to grate a La Toja stick into a wooden bowl. If I'm not gonna use it as a stick, it just seems made for a wooden bowl. I also don't like the l'occitane Cade metal bowl, so I grate my cade puck into a old Caswell Massey wooden bowl. I really enjoy the Cade from that bowl.

You could always pick your next favorite soap and mill the puck into the AOS bowl, if the puck doesn't naturally fit.

Thanks guys for the quick responses. While I know that I can make something work, I still would like to know which hard soaps fit the AOS bowl. If I recall correctly, the TOBS bowls look similar to the AOS bowls. Also, does anyone really know if the DR Harris pucks will work? Thanks again and I look forward to everyone's answers.

I am absolutely positive (I think) that there have been threads on which makers' soap pucks would fit in which empty wooden bowls! Thought it would be in the Wiki, but can't find it. Maybe a search?

I'll just sit back and wait for an answer of what to put in my recently emptied AoS bowl. . .

I sure do miss the puck of Lemon I so ruthlessly killed in the 3017 fashion. :blushing:

I have a bowl of AOS. I also have pucks of Harris, trumper, c&s , RL safari, Penhaligons, and maybe one or two more brands. ill check to see what all fits tomorrow morning. I dont have MWF or Tabac so cant help you there. anything else you can think of that I might have and could try?

I have the old and the new formula. The new formula works pretty good, but just requires a little more work.

When I run out of my old Lavender, I'm going to try Czech and Speake. I've read they are made by the same makers as the old AOS formula and are similar

How perfect a fit are you looking for?

I pulled an AoS puck out of the bowl from my stash of tallow-first AoS.

The puck is too wide to fit in my DR Harris bowl. The AoS puck fits perfectly in a T&H bowl.

The diameter of a QCS puck I have is about perfect for the AoS bowl, but it's a bit too tall (for few shaves at least).

Harris fits although a little loose on the sides and the bowl will not close all the way.. it's not bad though and will be good once you get through some shaves.
Trumpers: does not fit through. will need to shave some off the sides. not sure if the lid will close after since I couldn't get it to fit through.
C&S: too wide so the lid will not close
Safari: Like DR Harris, loose on the sides and slightly too wide for lid to close all the way
Pens: fits like a glove, both new and old formula
C&E: I dont know if they sell refills or if they all come in bowls, but if you have a refill puck, it will squeeze in tightly but will work.

That's all I can check for you. The rest of my stuff is vintage and doubt you'd ever find stuff like that without its bowl.

IIRC Valobra should be coming out with a hard shaving puck and they made the AOS tallow soap. I know it is not out yet but I think it will be out this fall.

Guys, thanks very much for all the info. I really appreciate it. Now, on to the fun of picking a new soap.

I have 4 AOS bowls and plenty of AOS refills.

I also have Mikes tins and several refills.

If I didn't have the AOS refills and wanted to use the AOS bowls, I'd use Mikes bars to form to the bowls and would not look back.

Harris pucks are to thick to fit an AOS bowl.

Has anyone noticed how the TOBS bowls look identical to the AOS bowls? Makes me wonder if their respective pucks are interchangeable. The TOBS sandalwood soap seems to get good reviews also. Could be a good substitute for my nearly dead AOS sandalwood puck.
