Removing Stuck Blades From Injector Magazine

I have a late 40's era brass Schick Injector magazine that I want to load with new blades and use, but the blades in there (it looks to have the full 20 or close to it) won't eject. The first three or so came out, but now they won't budge as they appear to be stuck together. Would a soak in warm, soapy water loosen them up? Would boiling cause any harm?

Hi SNJ -

Not sure about the construction of your brass magazine - sounds nifty and worth re-using if possible. Don't know if this helps, but for what it's worth...

I've been buying NOS Personna 74 injector blades. The oil or grease they used to pack these with lo these many decades back has turned into hardened gunk. Never got a single blade to eject.

Here's what I did:

(1) Remove the plastic end cap - it'll pry out. Keep it or throw it away - not really needed.

(2) You'll find the blades are held in by a curved spring. The two ends of the spring support opposite ends of the stack of blades. Use a toothpick or something like that, inserted into one of the holes in the blades *through the slot in the top of the pack* to pry all the blades backward, out the end where you removed the plastic cap. Do this over a towel or something so the edges won't hit anything hard.

(3) Use an old DE to pry the blades apart, one at a time. You can insert that into the corner where the sharp edges of the blades are. Mine come apart fairly easy.

(4) Wipe with 3-in-1 oil to remove old grease and lubricate blades. All you need is a bit from the end of your finger or, better yet, a Q-Tip. Don't touch the edges! Just the flat part.

(5) Re-assemble stack gingerly (the oil will provide enough adhesion to keep them together if you're careful) and re-insert into the pack. This is the tricky part. You'll need to pry the near end of the spring back with that toothpick, and push it onto the other end. But without rubbing the edge against the case! Keep it toward the non-edge side.

This sounds like a god-awful amount of work as I read it, but it really only took a around 5 minutes to do. It wouldn't be worth it for crappy blades, but for the 74's, yeah it is.

Your's might be constructed completely differently, but perhaps some of this is relevant.

Thanks, but my magazine is all metal and the piece on the back that holds the blades in is very firmly attached -- so the construction is a bit different. Anyway, I soaked the entire magazine in WD40 and that unstuck the blades and allowed me to eject all of them, but after ejecting the last one, the spring turned sideways so the magazine is no longer usable.
