Removing Rust?!

My wife's Lady Gillette had a rusty blade in it and the rust moved to the head of the razor. How should I go about removing the rust?

The times that I seen this I've been able to just rub it off with anything from my thumbnail to a tooth pick.

Good luck.

Scrubbing bubbles, hot water and a toothbrush should do the trick. I wouldn't use anything harsher, it could take off the finish. Just be patient and brush gently and steadily after a good hot soak and then a soak in the bubbles.

The same thing happened to me with my gold colored Gem featherweight. I had gotten ahold of bad blades, and just left them in the razor as though it was any DE blade... I even used it a second time before I noticed rust everywhere . The blade had rusted to the thing and I had to pry it off. a CLR soak and deep scrub got it off, but there was still a little area where you could tell it had been... So I put some elbow grease into it and managed to rub it off with my fingers... Thankfully, its back to normal now, gold color and all :001_smile

I've been able to remove rust with a soapy soak, an old toothbrush and sometimes a Q-Tip. If it's really bad, you might want to try 0000 steel wool with a little Brasso.

Don't use CLR on that Lady Gillette - the handle is anodized and CLR is WAY too harsh.

As Darjeeling Express said, scrubbing bubbles is all you need, along with a toothbrush for the worst rust. If you can't get the bubbles I have found the Comet Bathroom cleaner liquid (NOT Comet Powder!!!!)
works fabulously.

Umm, yeah... Its a little too late... This happened months ago, and like I said, nothing bad happened in the slightest, probably because I only soaked the head. and after all, the R in CLR does stand for Rust. But don't worry. I am getting in some non rusting blades, so I don't expect to have to ever do that again. But, should the worst happen again, I will defiantly keep that in mind.

Well, there's scrubbing bubbles, or the cheaper Bissell version, and there's always Simple Green. You could always try good old hot water and liquid dish soap. Not liquid dishwasher detergent. I try to keep chlorine away from anything plated and anything cuprous (copper based) such as brass. Pretty sure it's not good for aluminum, either.

Or you could just soak it for a few hours in 91% rubbing alcohol. You'd be amazed at how well alcohol, soapy water, and an old toothbrush or fingernail brush work for cleaning up old razors.
