Refinery Post shave balm $8 at Marshalls!

I picked up a bottle of this ASB at Marshalls for $8 last week. I never really heard of it before but going by the ingredient list it seemed to be promising and and for $8 I figured id give it a shot. I did a little research when i got it home and found out it retails for over $50! I thought this stuff better be amazing for that kind of money. Fast foward to this weekend. I finally gave it a try this morning and I was pretty impressed it killed any razor burn almost instantly, soaked in very quickly, didnt leave my skin sticky or greasy, and left a nice mild cooling effect for about 5-10minurtes at all like alot of other ASB. The smell was the only thing i didnt like, it smells kinda funky. I dont think there is any added fragrance probably just the natural smells of the ingredients. All in all it was definitly worth $8 and definitely not worth the full retail of $53 so if you have a Marshalls near by give it a shot.

It could be the ingredients, or it could have gone rancid. Not to rain on your parade, but by the time grooming products end up at places like Marshall's, they've been around a while, and you have no way of knowing what kind of shape they're in. I've found some good grooming bargains at Marshall's, but I'm always a little leary of what I might be bringing home. Still, for $8, you can't really go too far wrong, huh?

Its not a rancid smell, the best i can describe it is, its kinda the scent that some "uscented" lotions or soaps have. Ive found a few other really good deals at Marshalls/TJMaxx. Recently it was a Vulfix #849 brush($10),Vulfix shave cream ($6), and a bottle of Royall Spyce AS ($6).

I gotcha. Ironically, I have the same feeling about The Gentlemens Refinery balm, which also sells for a pretty penny. Their unscented balm is a great product, except it smells funky to me, and it's not rancid; it just smells.

I guess its not easy to make a product thats completely unscented since most ingredients have some sort of smell. If I was gonna spend any where near $50 on an ASB it would have to smell damn good as well as all the other stuff a good ASB is supposed to do. But I guess for under $10 I can put up with the short lived funky smell, luckily its really good at soothing irratation on my neck and doesnt leave any sticky residue.

That's interesting. I don't notice any smell with TGR unscnted balm. The Standard balm has a pretty srong scent, but both are very effective for me, and I like the scent of the Standard, too.

Noses are weird, aren't they? I've seen some people say TGR unscented balm has absolutely no scent to it at all, whereas one gent in the product review thread said it smells like lemon pastries. Yet another went so far as to say it smells "sort of like an old lady nursing home scent mixed with something else that's inappropriate to mention here." My ex g/f said it smells like cinnamon and gym socks, and she could smell it on me (if she sniffed directly on my face, not from any real distance away) for quite some time after I applied it. Everybody's different, I guess. For the record, I tend to agree most with my ex's description.

Yes, I sort of ran into that with Pre de Provence shaving soap, too. Some folks rave about the sage scent, how nice and strong it is. I only get a very faint whiff of what smells to me like Ivory soap. I use the PdP all the time for superlather, as it works very well for me mixing it with nicely scented shaving creams.
