Red Tip question

OK, so I've owned several late 50's RedTip SS. In general, I found these to not be that aggressive, kinda like a fatboy set on 4. Recently I acquired a '55 (A4) Redtip. Jeez, is this thing aggressive, maybe like a fatboy on 7 or 8. It is kind of cool, loaded with a feather, it is really a test of my technique (and my first aid capability :scared:). Is this usual, did the RedTips get less aggressive with the manufacturing date, or is there that much variability within the product line?

How does the blade gap look? I'm wondering if perhaps the safety bar is bent on your model? I recall a post here in which a member modified his Tech to more or less remove the safety bars entirely. A previous owner dropping the razor could do much the same thing

I was wondering the same thing. I have two '55 Red Tips and they are about like a 4 on the FB.

I was wondering if ur Red-Tip might be British? I looked on the wiki at the aggressiveness chart and it appears that the British model red-tip had a bigger blade gap?

When I loaded a blade in it it looked like the gap was significantly greater than my FB at 3 (my usual setting). I'll take a close look at to see if the safety bars are bent. How can I tell if it's British, would it say made in the UK?

+1 I have never found this razor to be agressive!

So I just did a head on head comparison with my E1 fatboy and it looks like the blade gap on this Redtip is ~7 on the fat (I have no way of measuring). It doesn't look like the safety bars are bent, but the endcaps are missing, that wouldn't make a difference would it?

Look under the head of your Red Tip. Where the handle meets the base plate is there a "+" symbol. If so this would explain the greater aggressiveness of your razor. My understanding is that Red Tips marked in this way indicate models with wider blade gaps.

I've got a '59 RT with two "+"'s on the bottom...

Can't see a "+" on the bottom but there is a fair amount of plating loss on the underside of this shaver. Shaved this AM with a fatboy set at 3, nice and smooth and not a weeper in sight. The RedTip will be PIF'd

My Red Tip is a C-1, with two "+", but I'd also compare it to my Fat Boy on ~4 or 5. I haven't used either of them in quite a long time, but I don't remember the Red Tip jumping at me as anything super spectacular. I might have to load them both up and do a little "Selsun challenge" and see which half is better, I just hope one side doesn't tingle:lol:

I have an A 4 Red Tip and it is not overly aggressive. I would rate it as a 3 on a Gillette Slim scale. Sorry, I don't have a Fat Boy.:001_rolle
