"Red Dot" Fat Boy

You don't see these around very often, so I though I would share some pictures showing the differences/similarities between this and the regular production Fat Boy and the Toggle, for which it is more akin to. The easiest way to describe the "Red Dot" prototype is that it is like a Toggle with a TTO knob, as it shares the same base plate, guard bars, adjustment knob, and hefty weight (Toggle is 3.1 oz, "Red Dot" is 3.0 oz). When looking at this razor, it becomes clear as to why this never became the production model, as it simply would have cost too much to manufacture and sell at the target price of $1.95 (the Toggle retailed for $10). Unlike the production Fat Boy, the "Red Dot" does not have a lock-down turn, it just tightens like any other TTO razor. Also notice that the case was a little different, possessing a true "dome-shaped" lid. This is a wonderful razor with a build quality that is right up there with the British Gillettes, and certainly a far cry from what eventually went into mass production.

Very cool side by side, I had always wondered what the differences were, and VERY nice pics!

Now.... just to find one.... hmmm..... another for the RAD list....

Thanks,

JD

Nice job R&B, we don't get around to discussing the red dot often. Thanks for the side by sides. I'm sure the newer fellows will enjoy the education.

On the Red Dot Fat Boy the adjustment don´t move the blade plate. Only the gap was changed with the adjustment like the toggle:

Is there another thread that has good pics of a "Red Dot" Fat Boy? Just how does one identify a Red Dot?

I have a Fat Boy, and its adjustment indicator is red. But, it's a 1960 (F1), so, according to the posts here which state that all Red Dots have D1 date codes, this isn't one. But, I'd like to know before it heads to the B/S/T.

Thanks.
