What's new

Red and Black sets, New, or New Deluxe?

I always see the red and black sets with a common bar handled New inside. But this ad shows a New Deluxe.
edit: sorry no pic. It's from July of 1934.

Interesting note: Gillette is still calling their 3 piece razors 'adjustable'

Here is a link to another similar ad from August.

That pic sure looks like a NEW Deluxe, but it was my understanding that the Red and Black sets were garden variety NEWs.

i may be missing something, but the ad looks just like the set on mr. razor's web site; the handle looks like a bar handle; doesn't have the diamond pattern of the deluxe series.

Here's a quote from AsylumGuido in a previous thread enquiring about different News in Red and Black Sets.

Actually, I believe what you have there is yet another Red & Black Set Variant. Note the handle design. The flat shouldered neck has been identified with a number of different Red & Black NEW variants. The knob is indeed that of the Tuckaway design. But, note the barrel. It has the larger five dot diamond pattern found on the New Improved and NEW Deluxe barrels, as opposed to the smaller three dot diamond pattern found on the Tuckaway handles. I have only found this combination of neck, barrel and knob in the Red & Black Sets. Note the rounded shoulders on the neck of the Tuckaway and New Improved below and their respective diamond patterns. You will also find that the handle is longer than the Tuckaway and will fit perfectly into the Red & Black case.

The Red & Black Sets were low priced sets which were sold in the 1930's and advertised as having "Gillette Blue Blades and a Gold-Plated Gillette Razor" without mention of which gold plated razor. I have seen no fewer than seven, and maybe now eight, various razors associated with the set. My theory is that the Set was marketed as a means of selling off leftover parts. The only truly new part was the flat shouldered neck which allowed it to be used with a number of different heads and still fit in the Red & Black case.

Here's a llink to a previous thread that mentions a couple of different News coming in Red and Black sets.
