What's new

Recycling for fun & profit...and scales:)

I was looking for a good place to buy some micarta blanks to make scales with recently, Paco said I should talk to Doc.

Doc not only pointed me to a good place to pick some up but also said he made his own sometimes. This seemed really interesting so I looked into it, realized it was a nasty, gooey, pain in the neck. Plus the up front cost of the chemicals was prohibitive, something like $60-70 I think. But now I wanted some home made micarta.

I started thinking about material...I had a favorite pair of shorts that I had worn to shreds. They were no longer decent to wear in public. But I couldn't throw them away, they just sat in the bottom of a drawer. Borderline hoarder behavior. This is them:

The stupid look on my face and the gimpy looking shoulder was because my shoulder was dislocated (see how it just hangs there?) and it kind of hurt.

I had a favorite shirt, pretty much the same story...holey, worn out completely, still getting worn now and then but definitely time to retire it. Reeeaaalllly didn't want to though.

I wasn't into shaving very often pre-B&B.

Long story short, Alfredo (Doc) was good enough to make me some micarta out of this stuff. Providing it was washed, especially the shorts!

So now instead of throwing these away I get to make straight razor scales out of them. This is both sides of one piece, it takes quite a bit of fabric to make a slab of this but I'm going to be able to get two sets of scales from it. Pretty thrilled! Thanks again Alfredo!

I will update this with the new razors once they are done, just wanted to show off Doc's awesome work.

very cool!!!!

I firmly believe memories can be retained by/attached to certain items. I can't wait to see the final product!!

ETA: love the Social D tattoo ;)

Thanks guys. Started working on a pair last night. I was honing a gold dollar to use the scales with but this morning I received this Ebay purchase, think I will use it instead. It's a nice razor but the scales on it don't fit so well. The wedge has been sawed away and the blade is a little too large for them anyway.

Great idea, just be careful that they don't camouflage your straight - one unsuspecting morning whilst putting on your trousers he suddenly becomes a she!

you so totally don't look like your voice on the phone.....

best o luck with the scales...

LOL..everybody says I sound just like my dad on the phone which is strange because I don't sound like him in real life at all.

Thanks, scales are coming right along.

Here's the first set, these took quite a bit of sanding but other than that the micarta was pretty easy to work with. I love this 6/8 Century too, about to have a shave with it but it feels like it took a really nice edge.
Alfredo, thanks again! I really like this razor.

Domo Arigato Pacosan!

I took my time on these and they really look better than my lousy pics..color is darker and not as washed out. I'm just glad I didn't have to throw the shorts out. And also that they aren't sitting in the bottom of my dresser drawer in shreds making me feel like a weirdo.

Curious minds want to know more about the process in which shorts become micarta :)

BTW, great work on the scales !

Looks good, very cool how your shorts and shirt are preserved.

Good thing the shorts were clean.
