recommendation for a chair - Anyone use Herman Miller embody?

From what I know Herman Miller makes some very nice stuff, but it is expensive. My dad was having back problems, he ended up getting a new chair for his desk at work. I do not think it was a Herman Miller chair but it was along the same lines as one. His back problems for the most part went away.

Herman Miller make nice chairs. In fact, the condo the wife and I stayed at on vacation had HM chairs for the kitchen table. they were awkward to sit in because I kept sliding back on the seat so much, but they were damn nice to look at

Hi there,

I don't own an Embody (yet), but our office got a model to test for a couple weeks (from a local Herman Miller dealer). We've always had Aerons at work, and I've been using mine for over 10 years. I got to sit in the Embody for 3-4 days, and hands down I prefer it over the Aeron, which by the way is a very very good chair.

Why is the Embody better? Let me count the ways:

- The narrow seat back -
I thought this was weird at first, and might not be as comfortable as a wide back, but the seatback design really contours to your back much better. It bends and flexes with your back while providing support. Very responsive - feels like all parts of the seat flexes with you, unlike the Aeron.

- Great for leaning back -
I admit, I like to slouch and slink low in my chair. I like to lean way back and sit low so my eyes are somewhat parallel with my laptop monitor. Yes lousy bad posture but it's comfortable to me. Embody is GREAT for this. I can lean as far back as I want and I don't feel like the chair is trying to adjust ME by giving too much resistance and pushing me forward. Instead it just supports me however I choose to sit.

- Seat length adjustment -
Embody comes in one size, but you can adjust how long you want your seat to be with two handles on the sides of the seat. Just move forward and back to adjust based on how long your legs are. Easy. Aeron doesn't have this. I have to say the Aeron's sloping curve at the seat edge has never been my favorite thing.

- Comfortable fabric -
The upholstery feels breathable yet fabric-like. I prefer it to the mesh. More cushiony, in a way. People who tend to get hot easily though, may want to opt for a chair with better airflow like the Aeron.

the Embody really feels like a chair designed for those who sit for long periods of time at work. I think it's fantastic. Quite a number of people at the office are lusting after it. I'm hoping I'll get to replace my Aeron with it one day.

thanks guys....just tried it at a dealer yesterday and boy it is amazing....
I think to off set the costs I am going to sell some of my gear - it won't even get close to covering the costs of the chair but it will nevertheless help :)

I have used an Aeron chair for 9 years until I recently sold it. I liked the aeron but did not think it was worth the price. I like the embody and will consider buying one. Make sure your doctor writes a script for it and you will not have to pay sales taxes.

I have had an Aeron for 9 years and it was one of the best purchases I ever made.

I set in it at least 8 hours a day, at least 5 days a week. I paid about $700.00 for it.

With that said, a great chair is worth every penny. I would check out several chairs in the price range, and see if you can sit in them for a week or so without charge.

its late and i can;t remember....

i just a very nice chair, not a HM, but a very nice one...brand new it was 800 bucks, on craiglist it was a hundred...with that said, it is very comfortable. Up to ten hours a day and no back pain of discomfort...it is a work station chair and i wish it has the higher back on it, with that said, if i ever purchase another chair i will have no qualms buying this type of quality again and paying the higher price for it....great chair, great shoes...who needs clothes !!!!

Thanks for tip Austin. I am going through my new work account - and since its an educational institution -I get that 1800 $ chair with all the available options for 900$. The cheapest on the internet is about 1300 $.

I am just curious - would this be able to qualify for the flex account?
