What's new

Recommend me some weird/local/special soap

I went on a bit of a frenzy lately and expended my shave den something good. This is what I have right now:

Arko Shave stick
D.R Harris Arlington
D.R Harris Lavender
GFT Rose
Kent/MWF
L'Occitane Cade
Palmolive stick
Speick Stick
Tabac
Valobra stick

On my to get soon list is: Irish (sp) Moos, GFT Lime, and Pre de Provence.

I listed those so you could see what I have. I consider these soap to be ''mainstream'' as in easily available and known by many around here.

What I want from this post is this: Tell me about rare, weird, special, or local shaving soap. I do not care if its only made in Germany and it cost 25 bucks to be shipped to my house. I want the good stuff that is unknown but to a few of us.

Also, please no Mama Bear and The Gentleman's quarter. I know about all of them and I am not interested yet in their product.

This will be fun.

How about the much sought after Godrej shaving round? Pretty obscure for most American wetshavers. Of course, everybody with whiskers in South Asia knows about it, but they've still managed to keep it pretty quiet here in the US.

Why not start making your own? Just pull a fight club and sneak into the plastic surgeon's dumpster...

with my legendary manual skills I would probably manage to make a bomb instead of soap. I refuse to be the guy who is responsible for the apocalypse haha.

Here is an as yet (to my knowledge) unmentioned one: Billy Goat Soap. I found this vendor at a local fair. It's not the thickest lather, or the slickest either, but I get a great close shave. It smells like most unscented milk soap does, though a very slight hint of rosemary does come through. After the shave is over, my face feels fantastic. Nice and moisturized.

I have yet to try the other wonderful craft soapmakers products mentioned here on B&B, so unfortunately I cannot compare to the likes of Susie's or Mamabear's or others. I did try a small sample of TGQ soap once, and found the lather similar, though the unscented Billy Goat was gentler on my skin.

If you stumble across it, do give it an honest try. The initial performance is underwhelming, but it grows on you. It's a local (for me) soap though, so I didn't have to pay for shipping. Perhaps I might be more critical if I had? Either way, while certainly not exotic or spectacular, I will definitely be buying more for my regular rotation.

I also like Williams soap though, so keep that in mind before committing any dollars.

And I too would like more information about the La Toja pic posted by Dink
I found the La Toja soap here: http://www.latoja.com/manantiales/productos/cuenco-afeitar.asp. Now I just need to find someone who will ship it to Canada!
