Recommend me a good hair wax that doesn't cost a fortune

I recently went to a real barbershop and they gave me an old-school 50's haircut with the comb-over. It looks good and they put some AMERICAN CREW hair wax in my hair that made it stay there without being greasy. They sold me a cup of it and it was ridiculously expensive (20 bucks), but I figured what the hell, why not, I wanted to try it once anyway. It is admittedly the best hair wax I've tried, ever. Every day it makes my hair look great and it keeps it fantastically in place. It doesn't make it greasy and it gives a nice shine to it.

The thing is, I can't imagine that it's the only hair wax that's good. There must be something out there that does the same thing for less money.

I tried many different goo/hair gels but none of them ever really worked for me and some of them gave me an itchy scalp. I also tried Murray's, but that's way too thick and makes my hair look fat.

Anyone's got some tips for me? :001_cool:

I went up to the store to try American Crew and found it, but the price was $21.99. Does that price sound right for 3oz? I opted not to get it because Amazon offers it for basically half of the price.

I just picked up a tube of Groom and Clean yesterday. Its water-based so no grease, and its an old school men's hair product so it will definitely give you that 50's shine and hold. I got it at Walgreens for $5. It's almost always found by the shaving supplies, not the other hair care stuff.

lol, try layrite or suavecito for a water based pomade. I personally detest modern products because they have so much chemicals in them. So I say either go greasy or stick with wax pomades that are equally as difficult to get out of your hair.
Grease is no worse for your hair than titanium dioxide and the 40 other chemicals.

How does murrays make your hair look fat? it had a 70% market share back in the old days, and it slicks down my flattop w/fenders pretty well, and i have annoyingly wavy hair. Maybe you just aren't styling it right/putting enough in.
And if you think about it, using a grease/wax based product has it's advantages, you spend 5$ on a tin of dax for example and wash it out once every 2-3 days. you save money from using product every day like you would a water based pomade(which is what american crew is)..so if you spend 21$ on A/C you are spending at least a dollar a day if not more on product(I would finish a tin of A/C in about 2 weeks), where as you are spending maybe 0.06 cents a week on grease based pomade(wash your hair every 3 days=6 days of pomade use+1 day with no pomade to let your hair breath).

Just saying. A/C is a pretty crap product compared to the hordes of others.

and if you're european

I use Moosehead hardcore wax, has a really strong hold and is only $9.
Only downside is that it has a really strong pineapple scent that does tend to stay with you all day.
But then there are worse things than smelling like a pineapple.

American Crew Fiber is really good for hair. I heard a lot about this wax and no doubt that its cost is not so high. I suggest American Crew Fiber for you friends.

You can find AC Fiber for for around $13.00-$14.00 on Amazon and Target.com has it for around $11.00. I pick up AC products at Nordstroms Rack, about $15.00 for Fiber which the cheapest I've found at a brick and mortar store.

Aveda makes a very good product. Its more along a clay. I put a small amount on my hair after toweling off out of the shower. It takes very little product to hold my hair. Doesnt look greasey or look like you used a hairspray. Been using it quite a while. Good Luck
