Recommend brush for short, stubborn beard and mustache

I have thick, sharp facial hair that tends to grow in a myriad of different directions. The individual hairs curve and curl even when quite short (less than 2mm). I just purchased some Honest Amish beard balm and oil to try, but I'd still like to purchase a good brush to train the hairs, especially those that comprise my mustache. Would a Kent military style brush work, or should I consider one with a handle instead? Is there a smaller type of brush better suited for mustaches but still usable on beards? And lastly, would I be better off with a comb of some kind despite my short hair length?

There are stiff boar hair brushes for brushing the beard. I picked one up for a few bucks online. It works better for longer beard growth. Unfortunately, I think the direction of the hair is determined by the follicle, and when kept short the hair will not respond well to attempts to change direction.
