Recommend a Good Scope for my 10/22

Hey everyone,
I recently picked up a Ruger 10/22 Takedown, and I'd like to get a nice scope for it. I don't expect that I would need to reach out much farther than 100 yards, and I understand that most people sight their .22s in at 50 yards. Mainly I just want to try my hand at some distance shooting to see if I like it enough to invest in a more serious rifle, like a Remington 700.
I really don't know much about optics, since most of my shooting experience is with pistols and shotguns. Any education you can offer would be appreciated.
I'd also like recommendations on good quick release scope rings.
Thanks!

Asking for scope recommendations is much like asking which car should I buy. How serious are you? How small of an object to you wish to be able to hit? What ammo do you plan on using? When you are buying scopes you are mostly paying for three things, how clear you can see, how well ( or not ) the scope stays sighted in and whether if you change the point of aim the scope does the same thing every time.

The rule of thumb is that is you serious at all you pay about the same for the scope as you do for the rifle. While this is not gospel I learned the hard way you get what you pay for in scopes for the most part.

With all that being said, most serious .22 shooters will use a 24X or 36X scope. There are some good used scope deals around if you know where to look. If you want to PM me I will be glad to tell you where : )

Firstly, be sure the scope is adjusted for 50 yards. Many centerfire scopes have paralax issues inside of 100 yards, and rimfire scopes are set for 50 yards. Weaver, Millet, Sightron are all popular with the 22 crowd. I would recommend a 3-9 at least.

In reality, buying a 22 to step into centerfire guns can be tough, rimfire is very addicting itself, and the cost/accuracy is pretty much unmatched. I would recommend a .223 or .30-'06 secondhand if you want to try centerfire. Ammo is readily available, reasonably inexpensve and the breadth of guns to choose from is as wide as you can imgine. $500 can get you a used gun with decent optics that may just need a little tuning to really get dialed in.

But, for a takedown 10/22, a $100 scope from a sporting goods store will be an excellent start. I personally love Leupold and their lifetime guarantee is great! I have bought used scopes from auction sites, send them in and they make them like new or replace them. Redfield is part of Leupold now and has the same guarantee on their new scopes.

You may also want to consider an adjustable objective scope, depending on your demands for precision, for parallax adjustments for close range down to 15 yds as well as out to longer ranges. These features will up the cost a bit. Also you said you want quick release rings. Don't expect a true "return to zero" if you are frequently taking your scope off, at best, it's usually "return to ballpark". I would suggest doing some reading at rimfirecentral.com before making your decision.

Leupold makes an excellent fixed 4 power compact rimfire scope, parallex set for 50 yards. I think they also make a 2x7. I have several of the fixed models, having gotten them before they offered the variable.
