What's new

Received Rooney large instead of small. Should I keep it?

I ordered a Rooney style 3 size 1 and have received a style 3 size 3. So that's a 26mm knot instead of 22mm knot, and a loft of 55mm instead of 45mm. The price for the large size I have received is about 50% higher than the price of the small size ordered.

I am mostly a face latherer, mostly soaps but sometimes creams. Ocassionally I will bowl lather, finishing off with a bit of face lather.

The most striking thing is the length of the handle .. a mighty 70mm (great for bowl lathering, but impossible to get your fingertips in the bristles if they are too floppy when face lathering).

So the dilemma ... should I luxuriate in the 26mm knot and keep it???

I prefer the smaller brush myself. I would contact the merchant and discuss.

I sold off my size 2 and bought a size 1. Especially for face lathering, the bigger brushes just shove lather up my nose and in my ears. (Not really, but they make you pay attention so that doesn't happen.) Larger brushes are also messy when trying to load up with soap.

I'd contact the vendor. Seems like the gentlemanly thing to do. My personal preference would be for the smaller brush, anyway.

I'd do this as well.

Even if you want to keep the larger brush it would be gentlemanly of you to let them know of their mistake and ask how they would prefer to sort it out.

PS! I prefer smaller brushes so I'd return it:wink:

I should add that the brush was packaged in a used Cyril R. Salter box which makes me think that the vendor is not exactly a high class act anyway!

I am pretty sure it's new - it's a fine looking brush, beautiful handle and weight too. The fact it came in the wrong box makes me less guilty about keeping it (if I decide to) as the vendor clearly doesn't take that much care.

It seems like most people on B&B prefer smaller knot brushes (at least looking at the B&B LE2009 brush thread) - perhaps with the exception of Ambrose! I was thinking that this could be a way for me to try a large knot brush at an affordable price. Presumably a 26mm knot with a 55mm loft is not going to be floppy (especially a Rooney). If anything, the thing that bothers me the most is the 70mm handle ... although that would be great for keeping the hands dry / bowl lathering ....

If it were me, I would make sure the vendor knows, and see what they want to do, if anything. The vendor's alternatives (since it was their error!) are to now let you keep the brush for no extra $$, let you keep it after paying the extra $$, or pay shipping twice more to return the brush and send out the new one. I would NOT pay to ship the brush back because they screwed up, nor would I feel good about keeping it without paying the difference unless the vendor told me it was OK to do so, sketchy company or not.

Even if you keep it, the brush will feel so much better on your skin if you sort this out rather than let it go. The vendor could conceivably contact you at a later date if they realize their error, then you have to explain why you used it. You probably WILL get charged then. My 2 cents.

I appreciate everyone's comments on the ethics of the matter, but what about the functionality of a style 3 size 3? What will it do really well? Really badly?

+1

Not only will you feel better about it, but you'll be protecting yourself.

Then it's 'Size 3? what size 3? I got the size 1 that I ordered'.. but no really, what would be the point anyways, you wanted a size 1, the 3 will be HUGE for face lathering...

If they don't want the 3 back, and you buy a 1 from them or somewhere else, you could I'm sure sell the 3 on BST for what you paid no problem, then everyone wins.

I owned the Rooney 3/3 purchased second hand from member here over two years ago. Not my cup of tea for sure and I promptly sold it. I never ventured into the world of Rooney thereafter but the 1/1, 2/1, or 3/1 have to be better.

I would return it to the vendor prior to getting it wet. Rather than viewing it as getting "more than you paid for" and keeping it because it is indeed a more expensive brush, I believe you will be better served ethically and in your daily shaves by one of Rooney's smaller more acclaimed models.

Admittedly it's probably an apples to oranges comparison, but I have a 24 mm silvertip and a 22 super (really 23 when I measure it, and the bloom left it wider than the silvertip at the brush head) from golden nib, and I wouldn't mind trying a larger brush at ALL, and I entirely face lather. I also probably have a fairly large and round face, so I might not mind the extra size of a brush, where a smaller face might find a larger brush too much.

If you think you might like it (and can afford the $$$ risk), consider finding a way to keep it that squares with your ethics, and try it out- decide beforehand this is a deliberate experiment and you might have to sell it. You may discover you absolutely love it! Worst case? You might lose some money selling the brush on BST, but you could probably use the money you get for it to buy the smaller brush, and you'll now know more about your brush preferences. You won't be bothered by 'the brush that got away.'

Then again, this is probably a biased forum... when will we ever recommend not buying another brush... razor... soap...etc...:lol:

If the situation was reversed, what you want done? I would contact the vendor, explain the situation, and reach an agreement. There is nothing wrong with being honest.

haha I do like a big brush, but there is a place in my heart for a little beast of a brush a rooney stubby finest size 1. Thats a different story, I have had a 1/3 super for about a yr. Its a great all around brush in my opinion, It can make explosive lather from either soaps or creams. It just may take a little time to get used to the size but once you do there is nothing like a large warm, soft badger knot on the skin. I ended up selling mine because I upgraded to a heritage horn rooney with a 26 knot 52 loft heritage hair. Its almost the same but the hair is much softer and the handle is horn the shorter loft gives it a bit more backbone. I mostly face lather but I have bowl lathered with it and its fantastic at both, I have to say that handle was one of my most favored handles of all time in that size.
