Razors similar to Lambda Athena or Yates Merica

Don’t people say that the Overlander is similar to the Athena?

I've never heard that. They are very different.

Honestly, that's the first negative I've heard about the Merica. Most reviews rave about its efficiency and comfort. They do say it's mild though.

It wasn't really a negative, just a meh. I am sure some folks like it, but I couldn't see reaching for the Merica.

There's certainly variability in preferences. I like the Merica and find it to be nearly as efficient as the Yates 921-H, which, for me, means it's quite good.

That’s interesting. I only have the Overlander and I find it to be very, very tame but still pretty effective.
The Overlander is very tame. A wonderful razor to use. With the Athena I need to maintain the steep side of a neutral angle to maintain its comfort. Which is not hard to do. The Overlander just won't be as efficient if you don't maintain its neutral angle. Comfort isn't an issue.

Used optimally do you think the Overlander can be as efficient as the Athena?

That's an unequivocal NO. But having said that, I can get as good a shave with the Overlander. But it would include more razor strokes and a sharp blade.

Edit to add: I would feel much more comfortable chasing BBS with the Overlander than the Athena. The Athena will get me there but I'm not going to chase it. The Overlander is quite comfortable chasing it. But even so, I can still over do it with the Overlander. Sometimes my technique can be off for whatever reason.

Thank you for that. Another razor I had never heard of. I'll research the Rocnel Elite. I had heard good things about the Bayonetta and it is affordable.

At this point I'm in no rush to buy but I enjoy researching different options that could be interesting to try someday.

On another note. I just discovered a French Artisan who makes custom brushes and safety razors. Apparently on French message boards people rave about several of the razor heads he offers particularly head number #4CS which many blackbird lovers seem to really enjoy. I'm tempted to try it especially since he offers free world wide shipping for any order above 100 euros. Lots of amazing custom made brushes and razor handles as well.

If anyone is interested to check it out: Mred - Matériel de rasage fait main et de fabrication française - https://www.mred.site/
Mate, I had to ask and forgive my ignorance. Saw the MRed website and noticed the Number 4 Head is available as a complete Razor and a neck only option. Would the latter be only the handle?

Yes it means only the handle. Don't be sorry, it's their fault, it is a bad translation. The website is in French and it uses a google plugin for translations. Unfortunately the translation is inaccurate. So to confirm, you can select Complete (for the head + handle) or Neck only (mistranslation for the handle only)

@SaguaroSmart thanks much Mate. The Razor is tempting and his work with the handles and Brushes is very cool. Thanks for sharing the MRed link, much appreciated.

You are welcome. I agree, he is very creative with the materials and designs. I was surprised to see he has razor handles matching the handles of star wars lightsabers which gives a futuristic look to a safety razor but he also has lots of other designs that look more traditional. His woodworking skills are also exceptional.

Yeah, Jacob Yates has great skill and also highest quality hardware for machining.

Now about the lightsaber hilt/handle thing, now I cannot unsee it... it indeed looks a bit like that.

I was not speaking of Jake at Yates Precision Manufacturing, although I fully agree with your assessment, he is a highly skilled expert and produces amazing razors (some of my very favourites).

We were referring to the French Artisan Michael Redondaud. His site is Mred - Matériel de rasage fait main et de fabrication française - https://www.mred.site/ he makes safety razors, bowls, stands, leather pouches, shaving brushes etc. I mentioned him because his creativity is off the charts, there are tons of different materials and designs to choose from and if you can design something for yourself and send it to him he will even consider making it custom for you. His razors with the number 4CS head have been very highly rated by people who enjoy the Blackland Blackbird. It's not the same design but apparently it compares in efficiency.

@SaguaroSmart my bad, sorry! But I learnt of a new razor maker I was not even aware of this way, thanks! :)

I might have seen his work before, the fancy handles remind me of someone who did this already for a while but didn't have a shop years ago.

Edit: Damn, he is from Clermont-Ferrand! As medieval studies/era afficionado this city is among the places I just have to visit one day!

I have several MRed razors and Blackbird. I can agree the #4CS shaves very nice.

Here are my MRed razors (3 in front). Also the three front brushes are from him. The middle one has a brass core that screws up and down to change length and balance point. The mug is his also.

I meant the middle razor adjusts it's center of gravity. The other two are "lightsabers". The brush on the right is carved in an amazingly realistic snakeskin pattern. The middle brush is carbon fiber, steel, brass, titanium, aluminum and resin. The far left is a jack-o-lantern at the top.
