RazoRock Superslant views, reviews, and shaves

Thanks for the helpful tips!

I will try the Astra Green on the less aggressive baseplate first.

Are there any significant differences between the plate types, e.g. an L2 and an L2+/L3+? The OC is an open comb and should therefore feel more direct on the skin?
So, as far as I can tell the differences are that each number has an additional amount of exposure. So 1 has less exposure than 2 which has less exposure than 3. However they all have the same gap. The + plates and ++ plates have larger gaps

How do you guys deal with a razor with superslant that comes with different plates? I want to buy one, but it's impossible to buy the one that's right for me without trying something first! Also, I've only been wet shaving for 6 months, so I guess the one that's "right" for me will change over time?
My goal is to not buy 10000 razors to find the one that's right for me, LOL.
Well, not always. I ordered the L3+ and hit the bull's eye. But then again, I have a few hundred razors and I like aggressive ones. So I just lowered one notch from the top.

Gentlemen,

I have had the opportunity to take a closer look at the SuperSlant and I must say that I like it very much! After a few shaves with it, I can confidently say that I am very happy with this razor!

For my SuperSlant set, I created one myself on IB:

RazoRock has some handles that appeal to me, and by chance, the steel handle in bamboo style and the Mühle R41 head found its way into my collection (I will report about it another time).

Now about the SuperSlant.

I have purchased both the L2 Base Cap and the L2++ Base Cap. The L2++ Base Cap has much more blade exposure than the L2, so for now I am only using the L2 Base Cap. My first attempt with the L2++ Base Cap did not go smoothly...

The SuperSlant is my second slant, alongside the Merkur 39C Sledgehammer. Therefore, it had to fill big footsteps.

However, Merkur might have thought through some details more technically. Upon insertion, the blade can catch slightly on the edge of the screw in the SuperSlant (the Merkur has a round guide here). Additionally, due to the larger surface area of the head, more friction may occur and the head tends to stick faster to the skin when it becomes dry. All of this is just nitpicking at a very high level and does not bother me in the slightest.

I have been able to achieve DFS++ to BBS with Perma-Sharp, Astra Green, King C. Gillette and Feather on all of my recent shaves. Overall, the SuperSlant is a fantastic stainless steel razor, beautifully crafted with an innovative approach to a slant design. It ticks a lot of boxes for me!

The Super Slant is growing on me and in a better way than the ringworm I once caught from a pet. Very smooth and close shaving and I even kept it on its ponderous stock handle this time around the whiskers. I like my plastic handles much better, but my stubble easily departed with a steel albatross beneath the razor’s head. Good stuff.

I just picked up a Superslant L3++ a little over a week ago and am about 7 shaves in with it. For some reason I had been resistant to getting a slant after reading things about how there's uneven exposure and blade reveal when looking across the bar and some other tradeoffs. I've been shaving with DE razors for ~13 years but have only had a few razors in that time.

I used a 34C for about 11 years, then a Timeless 0.95 for about a year. I sold the Timeless and bought a GreenCult 2.0 after that with the II, III, and IV plates. I've been shaving with that exclusively for the past year pretty much every day. I had sold the timeless because I found it quite inefficient and it required a lot of buffing to get a good result which pretty much made it so I couldn't shave every day with it. I really liked (and still like) the GreenCult 2.0 and found that I can get good results with the II, III, or IV plate, but that they shave quite differently from each other. All of those plates were much more efficient than the Timeless. I found that the best angle to use with those plates got steeper and steeper as you moved up in plate number. Shaves lasted noticeably longer with the IV plate vs the II plate and both benefited (for me) with a feather blade vs something a bit duller like a Nacet. Even with the IV plate, I have some areas on my neck that require more buffing than I would like, but I was able to get reasonably good and comfortable shaves with all those plates.

After using the superslant this past week I've noticed that I pretty much use zero buffing with it and there's noticeably less chatter (pretty much no chatter) relative to the GreenCult. It even works quite well with a Nacet, which I have always found slightly lacking relative to a Feather. It's really quite a comfortable razor and the most efficient of anything I have tried. After my experience with the GreenCult and the progression of plates I tried, I had kinda settled on wanting one of the WR2s with a large gap as I really wanted something a bit more efficient and the WR2 is somewhat unique in how much exposure per gap that it provides. Before I went that very expensive route though, I figured I should give the superslant a try based on the reviews in this thread, and I'm glad I did. It's very comfortable to shave with every day with almost no irritation and I have only gotten a few tiny weepers that have cleared up with just a water rinse.

Good show! Having acquired a (gently used) Wolfman WR3 I will agree that Wolfman razors sit in a class with very few other examples. :) As for the Superslant, I have L3SB and L2OC. Considering the difference between SB and OC in general there isn't too much difference between those two, and I use them pretty much interchangeably. I've been considering an L3OC, but I keep thinking that between that and my Wunderbar the differences would, again, be relatively insignificant.

Very, very good razors!

L2++ OC

Assured (Dollar Tree) first use

Omega tube cream, finger lathered

Not even this world class slant can turn the Dollar Tree blade into a winner

SAS, binned the blade and went back and binned the other 4 Assured blades that had a shave or two in them. Life's too short to give any more of my time to the Dollar Tree.

My L2 SB still makes me a lot of fun. :001_tt1:

Have a great weekend everyone!

So after I tried a Minora Stainless in my Superslant L3+ I was quite surprised to find that my left cheek was not BBS. Rasoiogoodfellas had a sale, and I had some cashback money. So for ~70 EUR I ordered the L3++ plate.

It just arrived. Here is a photo that illustrates one of the differences between the two.

L3+ vs L3++.jpg

Look how the ends of the guard are rounded and convex on the L3+ (left). On the L3++ those ends are actually concave with an indentation like a big channel (right).

When loading the blade and looking from under the guard I can also notice there is a hair more exposure on the L3++. 😍

L3++ OC in the house.
First shave today. I reduced my multi-day stubble with a quick straight razor pass, then did a left/right comparison, Wunderbar vs L3OC.
IMG_6367.jpeg

The Wunderbar\Rosseforp company time SS handle went left/first.
ATG above the neck, multi-grain (several vectors) on the neck, multi-pass (ATG, XTG) on the jawline itself. Simple, straightforward, effective.

L3OC on a custom Ti handle got the short straw.
The neck maelstrom on the right is coarser, tougher, fully the most recalcitrant whiskers parked on the least tanned and toughened substrate. Same approach as the left side, but with extra buffing at the center of the storm from every point of the compass. Perhaps some excessive farting around to get sufficient new razor playtime.

And the judges said:
Left - This guy is obviously quite comfortable with his Wunderbar. That side barely qualified as sport shaving. Fast and effective!

Right - The L3OC may be new, but Tanuki's L1OC and L2OC clearly prepared him for this half-face shave 1. Fully as effective as the Wunderbar. He claims more blade feel than the W-bar or an L2OC, but we want his report after a side-by-side shave with the two OC Superslants. No danger vibe at all. The Superslant OC design is a blade clamper/twister of the first rank.

Further details:
>Unwrapped two lovely Gillette Platinums for this test
>Mike's Natural Lime soap stick. I prepped before the SR pass with Col. Ichabod Conk Lime (old formula, also a stick). Post-SR, I went for a bike ride, 4km walk, informal bagpipe concert. A fine intermezzo in any multiple razor shave extravaganza. You can ask @flask28 , he was there. He reported an awesome MdC shave with no post-shave splash, balm, or masseuse. Tough guy.
>Inexpensive badger knot in a vintage Strong Set handle
>Face lathered with a bowl/pseudo-scuttle for titrating the H2O content and maintaining brush warmth.
>Splashed a lot of Pinaud Lime Sec. Summer! Just the usual Pinaud sting. I don't even have to shave to get face-slapped by Monsieur Pinaud.

Gratuitous (ineffective) drone shot hoping to contrast the blade reveal of our two contestants.

Super slantiness de-steepens the shave angle and makes blade reveal comparisons difficult.

Cool and slimy
Enjoy @Tanuki. There are always these if you could only have one razor postings I find highly disturbing, I would have a hard time to decide between Timeless Slim OC and SuperSlant L3++ OC. Or the Wunderbar. I might prefer the OC a bit but both have nevertheless some differences in how they shave and feel. I decided to keep both in the end, my L3 Plate went to a friend and neighbor. Who cut himself immediately.

Yeah, heavily torsioned razors make meaningful comparison photos highly difficult.

If you look from the side you see that there is a milled out "step" in the baseplate of the L3++ OC which is the main reason for increased effectiveness but also some more risk of injury.

Second RRSS L3OC shave today. Up against the L2OC.

Both on pre-war russky custom Ti handles, one Tibam, one rusdrunkbear

IMG_6372.jpeg

L2OC shaved the left side, L3OC shaved the right

Bottom line, L3OC has definitely more blade feel, slightly better efficiency. I would pick the L2OC for daily driving, L3OC for extra stubble or to achieve a particularly close result.

I was chasing the baby around my neck today. Monsieur Pinaud was quite direct and a bit brutal.

Been havin' one of those weeks. Farm chores, such as this wornout old hippie can handle, have been really taking up my time. When it's up around 38C/100F I'd really rather be inside with the heat pump set to a comfortable temperature, aided by a nice cool drink. But when it's this hot I have to be outside more often just trying to nurse the gardens through this heat wave and hopefully get them back on their roots afterward. That's been much on my mind, and since my mind is rather limited, it's pushed the idea of shaving into the "maybe tomorrow" category. In the words of the old song, time to either get a haircut or get a dog tag. :)

When that lack of interest in a shave surfaces, I usually just go with it. Keeps my life lower in stress; it'll happen when it happens. This morning looked good for a reset on my routine, as I was thinking about it yesterday while labouring in the furrows. While taking a brief pause for hydration and generally grooving on our beautiful little valley, I saw the UPS guy come roaring up the road and haul out in our driveway. Hmmm. I'm expecting a small package, but on a different carrier and tomorrow. Wonder what's up?

The gentleman handed me a small cubical box with my name on it. Return from Italian Barber. Long story a little less long, due to the incredible generosity of an honourable member here I now have the L3OC!

First shave was...suggestive. Which is to say, like an OC Wunderbar that's had it's teeth pulled and claws trimmed. :) Very efficient. More so than the L2OC. I'll say "some" bladefeel since I've lately spent a couple weeks with a Gem razor that has a naked edge. It got right into a couple of spots that are always hard to get. Without a lot of fiddling, for a first shave it was a pretty good one. Definitely looking forward to the next one!
