RazoRock SLAB DE Razor

I received my RazoRock SLAB razor in the mail last week and I've used it everyday since. I must say, I'm really impressed with it. The look and feel of it certainly falls into the ranks of good quality razors. I took a close look at the polished head as I have read a couple reviews indicating that the plating on the heads were not consistent. It looked fine to me.

For those who have not seen it yet, the SLAB is a three-piece DE razor. The handle has excellent knurling that ensures a firm grip even in the slipperiest of times. The handle itself is 80mm "marine grade" stainless steel. The head is chrome over zinc alloy (according to the Italian Barber website). I'm not sure where that falls in terms of estimated longevity when compared to chrome over brass; however, at the price point of $40, I will not complain.

I find the weight and overall balance very comfortable. Having mostly used my long-handled Mergress this past year, it was a nice change. That said, I still need some time getting used to the nuances of a new razor and leaving the comfort of my "old reliable" Mergress behind for now.

I have tried several blades in the SLAB (GSB, Voskhod, Gillette Platinum) and have been rewarded with a nice shave using each.

I was surprised at how aggressive the SLAB actually is. It's not super aggressive, but I did find it more aggressive than my original razors, the Merkur 34D and 38C. Looking at the razor with the blade in it, I noted that there was an impressive blade gap compared to some of my other razors (Sorry, I don't own calipers). If one is not careful, this razor could reach out and bite you. I nicked myself under my nose and it has been quite some time since I did that. Obviously, my injury was a "user error" but it did emphasize my observations regarding the blade gap.

Overall, this razor is really nice. I like how it looks, feels and performs and I will go out on a limb and declare that I will be keeping this razor indefinitely. I should mention that I sold my ATT Titan after trying it out for a few months and even swapping baseplates in hopes of getting it to work for me. Alas, I sold the Titan on the B/S/T not because it was an inferior product, but because it did not work for me. The RazoRock SLAB works for me and that's all there is to it.

Best Regards,

Jay

Excellent review on the SLAB. I have had one for about 2 weeks now and also really like it's shave. I was also surprised at the blade gap. It is quite large.

Overall though, it is an excellent little razor. Not as aggressive as the JAWS, but as you said, more aggressive than the Merkur's or EJs.

Thanks. I did a "double-take" at the blade gap. Lol. Actually, it gave me the chance to slow down and do it right. I think somebody somewhere at B&B noted that the handle is the same as another major brand. I can't think of it at the moment, though. In any event, the grip is phenomenal compared to my other DEs.

Looks very nice. The handle resembles Bulldog and the head resembles DE89.

I agree. I don't own a DE89, but I saw the resemblance from online pics. I believe the DE89 has a reputation for leaning towards the milder side. If correct, the SLAB is dialed up a notch.

Yep, it is more aggressive than the DE89. Looks similar, but bites a bit more. Never been bitten with my DE89 and the SLAB has got me once already.

I think this might be the other thread mentioned:

A quote from it:
It looks to be 100% identical to the new Ikon Shavecraft handle which is the other handle that you will see in this set of photos.

From my own experience, I also own the SLAB razor. I love its handle. The blade gap on the razor itself is a bit too aggressive for my preference at this time, but I'm still happy I purchased it along with the handle as it only costs $8 extra....

It's funny...The blade gap on the ATT Titan I owned seemed less than the SLAB, but felt really aggressive, more than the SLAB.

Thanks for the review! I'm thinking about getting one, too. Mainly for the handle, but since it's not much more coin to get the head also, it makes sense to buy both.

Nice review Jason!

I know I want one, but I can't help but wonder whether it'll be a little bit of a back step for me. I'm an almost exclusive '11 R41 user, pretty much the most aggressive DE out there, and I've got it dialed in getting great shaves every time. When I pull out the R89, my first favorite razor, its so mild and I have to work at it to get a passable shave. So, back around to my main point, I wonder if I'd be disappointed with the shave of the SLAB given my current working well setup?

Anyone have experience with the SLAB and R41 they can share?

You make a good point, John. Normally, I shave with my Mergress (occasionally a Fatboy) and do a three pass shave where I dial up the aggressiveness as far as "4" for the final pass. I'll have to do a comparison shave, but I still say that the aggressiveness of the SLAB is up there.

I know that there's a variety of factors that contribute to overall aggressiveness, but in the case of the SLAB, it's the significant blade gap, IMO.

That's a nice looking razor, I especially like the handle. Does anyone know how it compare to the Fatip?
