RazoRock Artisan - Boston Tea Party. Tingly feeling.

If I apply RazoRock Artisan - Boston Tea Party to my face I get a tingly feeling - even before shaving. Is that normal? Do others get this from this product? I've been fighting stiff/sore cheeks as I learn the proper technique (which has improved drastically recently with better control of blade angle). Perhaps it's due to my now-formally raw cheeks, but I haven't had this feeling with Mystic Waters. I didn't know if it might be on purpose and part of the "tea" thing. Thoughts?

Sounds like an irritation from one of the ingredients in the soap. If it happens again, I'd stay away from it.

Razorock Artisan soaps burn the hell out of my face. I have tried 4 of them, including Boston Tea Party. A shame because Boston Tea Party smells amazing....

As other posters have mentioned, it sounds like a reaction to an ingredient in the soap. I believe I have an irritation to Razorock Fresco, but I'm fine with the only Razorock Artisan soap I've tried - Muguet de France.

I have not had any problems with their other products I've tried (XXX, Cacao, Classic).

That's disappointing to hear. You're right. The scent was so much better than what I anticipated. I really enjoy it. It's so fresh. I think I'll give it a few days for my face to recover from my poor blade angle technique and try again. Thanks for the feedback Matt.

Thanks Rand77. I'm glad to hear about the Muguet de France. That sent is on my list.

If you want to see if it's a generic skin irritation or tied to your face getting used to DE shaving, lather the soap and apply it to the inside of your upper arm. If it burns, it's probably skin sensitivity to the soap. If not, it probably has to do with your technique.

I've had similar reactions to various soaps, including intense burning sensations with Musgo Real and Coates. It's the cream irritating your skin -- I'd put that sucker on the B/S/T if I were you.

Good plan.

Probably something in the scenting agent(s). No worries, plenty of other razorock and other products. The XXX gives me tingling but nothing else from Razorock gives me a reaction. Lots of sandalwood products give me issues too. Good luck!

Great idea Bob. I'll try that out soon. Thanks.

I tried XXX for the first time last night and I got the tingling burning feeling on my face. I'll give it one more try then I'll move on.

Does anyone know if there is a particular ingredient that often (not always) causes these irritations? I've read about fragrance causing problems, but are there other common irritants?

I would guess its one of the ingredients in the fragrance, sometimes a preservative or anti-microbial agent can do it.

This is just wild speculation, but if products are made in small batches, the strict control on the "proportion" of some ingredients may vary, resulting in an pH imbalance. I'm just guessing based on the fact that most products are composed of acids and a strong base - potassium hydroxide.

Someone who knows more about soap/cream manufacture would need to chime in for a more informed answer.

That is a tough question. Generally, I think it is the fragrance, but obviously you can be allergic to a particular ingredient. Trial and error is really the only way to find soaps that work for you. If a certain soap like the Razorock does not work for you, put it up on B/S/T for sale or trade for another one. No huge deal.

Your right. Just do it!

I feel obligated to RazoRock to update this thread with more information. My skin is reacting to other products too. I have a stack of 6 soaps that are all causing red, burning, blotchy skin. So it isn't just the RazoRock. I'm super disappointed, because I love the Green Tea scent of Boston Tea Party, and the lather is wonderful, but along with a lot of other well regarded products on this forum, it isn't working for me. In case others are having similar problems, the only thing I've found so far that doesn't irritate my skin is Mystic Waters Lilies of the Valley. They have a scent-free version that I have ordered too.

It's commonly due to essential oils, among other things--even in the absence of artificial preservatives, etc. The RR soaps have good ingredients and perform great, but a fair number of shavers have reported the same burning/tingling problem. This can happen, unfortunately, with even the highest quality soaps. In the worst case, other B&B members will be glad to have it, if you pass it on.

I'm curious, what other soaps are causing this for you?

Pat. I'm a little hesitant to list the other products because I've concluded it's a matter of my skin and not their product. But with that disclaimer, here's what I've used -

Severe irritation
RazoRock Classic Cream Soap

Moderate to severe irritation -
RazoRock Artisan Boston Tea Party
Honeybee Sandlewood

Moderate irritation -
Mitchell's Wool Fat
Honeybee Rosemarry Mint

No irritation -
Mystic Waters Lilies of the Valley

I'm thinking its the fragrance. It could be something else, but as Mandina said, the RazoRock Artisan ingredient list is pretty simple, so it's not likely the soap itself. I have a puck of MW unscented on the way. The only other thing that MW doesn't have that the others do have is coconut oil. My brief research has revealed that coconut oil is very drying. I've also found posts on other cosmetic type forums by people who have had severe reddening, blotchiness, and stinging from coconut oil. Continued testing ahead.
