RazoRock "Amici" Brush

You could be right NSmalls! We shall see how many more show :)

I wanted XXX so bad... It was hard to resist. But, I knew Joe would have it for awhile, and, I'm not much on doubling up on stuff so I decided I must finish my original tub first. I was being very stingy with it, now, I may give it the 3017 treatment! :biggrin1:

Time for me to be an enabler too... but I think you should buy XXX v2.0 a little before you finish the original so that you can have a couple back-to-back days of comparison. But I suppose it doesn't really matter as the old is gone so it doesn't really matter if it smells/performs better/worse/or the same.

It kind of boils down to my own curiosity of the effect of tallow. Some swear by it, some avoid it. But this would give a good opportunity to compare the difference with as many other factors as possible being kept constant.

Oh, sorry for the misinfo! I had bought all four La Fam balms way back on their first release day, and I swear at that time only DM had menthol. Its the only one i have now, oriiginal bottle :) Could be wrong, or it was added to later batches. The others I mentioned, I haven't tried or heard of menthol either way so I was just throwing it out there as check 'em outs :)

Actually I'm pretty interested in doing a comparison between old and new XXX. I think the old one is fantastic

I would love to hear comparisons, I never had an opportunity to try the old XXX,

I'd also be interested in hearing how the RR-ABCBA compares to the ABCBA. I heard that the RR-ABCBA is touch better than P160 also

Any more thoughts/reviews on the brush? I am not allowed to open mine until Xmas.

The Amici brush is well balanced. The handle has a good amount of weight to it.

I used it this morning and it needs to be broken in, for sure. My other Semogues were not nearly as scritchy out of the box as the Amici.

It is pretty stiff too, so it will maul any soap into submission. Remember, this is my first boar/badger mix.

It will be my first mixed knot as well. I am not a fan of boars so I was hoping that the mixed knot would win me over. It seems stiff but I am hoping the boar end of it will break in well. I may be in the minority here but I don't believe that badger brushes break in. It seems silly to me. It did not seem like it will be a scritchy brush when wet. I could be wrong about that. It does seem like it will destroy hard soaps. I am hoping that it will hold a good amount of lather. Christmas afternoon!!!

My haul from Italian Barber came in today (actual it got in on Saturday, but was sitting in my office's mail room).

Hey JonJeffman, and everyone else, lol, my post above was in answer to the comment on the Italian Barber thread. I have no idea how I managed to reply to this comment of yours in this thread instead! Very odd, but hopefully you figured it out. :)

Ok! Exactly 1/4 of the Amici's accounted for! Mine is at least at the PO according to tracking... Hoping the mailman doesn't cut it today and it gets delivered! Guessing theres a few guys hoping for theirs today too. Can't wait to see what shows up for everyone later today!

It's here, guys! My order came in today's mail, and I couldn't be happier! Along with my Amici came my entire order: XXX, ABCBA, Christmas in Tuscany, RazoRock lavender soap, balm and gel...and a few other goodies. I think I may have gone a little overboard, huh? Maybe I'll have to join the 2014 sabbatical?

The brush is every bit as gorgeous as all the other pictures made it out to be. Right out of the box, not to scritchy, and no funk smell, but I haven't got it wet yet. The handle has some heft to it, and fits my hand beautifully. First shave with it will certainly be tomorrow morning.

Anyway, here she is...Number 20 (if someone could enter mine in the chart, I'd appreciate it).

Some grades of badger are way scritchier than boar. In fact, most good boar brushes are way softer in the tips than even the high end badgers. I agree, badgers do not break in much, but they do break in some. Not is tip softness, but more in loosening up the knot in general. Only takes a few shaves for a badger to really come into its own. Boars have to have split ends before they start to shine. Fortunately, there are numerous techniques out there that work for accelerating boar bristle break in. My SOC SE, which has the same knot as Amici was able to be broken in to some degree before shave one. I used one of the numerous techniques out there and on the first shave the knot had a good number of split boar ends. The Mixed knot in question has some scritch to it and I think it comes from badger, at least partially. It is my opinion that some scritch will remain in this brush always. This will be the badger scritch. Once the boar bristles break in the knot will feel significantly softer in tips and dilute some of the badger scritch. It's interesting that Semogue's two band finest badger is scritchy. My own two band brushes that are all TGN knots are almost scritch-free. Just goes to show you there is always variation in the hair type from manufacturer to manufacturer. In any case, the SOC SE and my newly arrived #18/100 Barbear Classico Mistura, which is a Semogue mixed brush with a slightly smaller knot than the Amici are really a joy to use, but I do enjoy a bristle feel on my face, so YMMV.

Have fun with the Amici, it has a great knot that needs to be experienced.

You're right, its the Semogue badger that has the scritch, not the boar. I have several Semogue boars, the LE '11 Bristle 2, the LE '11 Badger 1, and the TSN '12 LE (mixed 22mm). Every Semogue boar I've owned has been soft right out of the box, getting softer over time. The LE badger has scritch, but its an amazing knot to use and, it did break in a bit over time, getting softer from where it started. The TSN LE mixed knot also started scritchy, but I knew it was from the badger hair as it was the same feel at first. Over time, its softened up alot and really does show the best of both hair types. One thing I like about it, not mentioned yet I think, is the mixed knot doesn't go all crazy bedhead like the boars do. It stays together just like a badger. Yet it flows and has a backbone like boar.

Being an old Semogue pro, I'm not expecting the Amici to wow me with something I haven't experienced before, but I am expecting it to do an awesome job like all the others I've owned, anf to love it and give it a permanent home. :)

I had the same impressions. I just received #92, plus a couple of tins of XXX. I haven't shaved with it yet, but I love the feel of the brush. It has a heavy handle with eight flat sections to give you great grip, and a dense knot. I am really looking forward to using it!
