Razor glide

I have a Gillette New and an Aristocrat with a lot of plating loss and does not glide very well is there a way to fix that and not by replating it?

I'm not so sure this would be caused by plating loss. I've shaved with some razors with harsh plating loss with no problem. I do rinse my razors before each pass, though. This could also be a problem with lather-building.

I recently took the plating off the head of a new so the top plate was back to it's base copper. It slid across my face like an eel down a greased drain-pipe.

The solution is to polish the guide bar on the Aristocrat and the combs on the NEW.
Micro-Mesh pad can get them a smooth as buffing, but since you'll be down to unplated brass you'll need to do regular up keep.
The finest of the Micro-Mesh pads will keep the metal smooth without removing much material, they're use for removing scratches in glass.

Are these easy to find?

I get them here. They have a local store.
The pads are washable and last a long time.
I use these pads as a final polish before buffing on metal parts.
I use the coarser pads on wood before finishing and I use the finest pads to polish the finish on wooded brush and razor handles on the lathe.

You can get them for even less here.

Thank you. :thumbup1:

It just happened with the New and the Aristrocrate is newish and open comb as well. Would a wire wheel for the drimmel work as well?

I use the wire wheel in the dremel for removing plating.
To get the the comb/guide bar slick you want to polish it smooth as glass which is why I suggested the micro-mesh pads which start out at about 600 grit.
You could use a buffing wheel on the dremel with some brown rouge (tripoli) to get the same effect.

I started polishing my New and the plating started to come off so I broke out the brasso and it started really coming off and now most of it is gone I just need to get hard to reach areas.

That is why I broke it out figured that if it was coming off it might as well come off and boy did it work

If the razor isn't rough to the touch, you should be thinking about your soap and lather. If your soap isn't terribly slick or if your lather is drying out, that can cause the problems you're describing.

One of the slickest soaps I've used is Proraso/Bigelow. It's pretty easy to find and easy to work up a lather with. Give it a try if you haven't yet.

Being honnest with myself I think it was a little of both. With My new Merkur it is a lot less so that does say that lather is a factor.
