Razor for a newbie

My roommate has been using my Parker 90R for a couple of weeks and absolutely loves it (I kept the 39C for myself :-D)

His birthday is coming up and I was thinking about getting him a starter kit.

He been reading up and thinks he should buy a 38c because of its status as a newbie razor. He prefers longer handles. I was thinking about getting him a EJ DE89 or DE89L (is there a difference aside from the lines?).

Any recommendations/suggestions as to which razor to get for him?

I don't own one personally, but I don't believe I have ever seen anyone say something bad about the EJ DE89.

Lines are the only difference, AFAIK. I'd be concerned that the DE89 might be a bit slippery; I got the L myself.

I personally own a EJ DE86 which basically is the same razor as the DE89 except with a black handle. the heads are the same.

It's my best looking razor and one of the favorites in the rotation.

I recently got a EJ DE89..absolutely love it, I have not experienced any slippage with it either. I was previously using a Merkur 23c which was good, but after using the EJ DE89 I'm not sure how much love the Merkur will be getting...here is my football inspired analysis of the two.
