razor feels sharper on one side...

Hey guys,

I shaved with my Fily #13 last night and experienced a really weird phenomenon. I always start with the right side of my face...that part went well without any issues. I then moved to the left side of my face and although the first few passes were okay, when I got to my chin/moustache area the razor started pulling like crazy...Crumbling edge or uneven bevel?

Any ideas?

Thanks

JF

thanks! I've been honing for quite sometimes now and usually get good results. Now that I think of it, it sounds like the razor became microchipped. The razor's edge just deteriorated quite a bit during the shave.

Nah I actually took my time to really work the lather (Cella). The right side of my face went great but then went I started on my left side I could tell that the edge was more "grabby". Just to test my theory I also went back to my right side for a little touch up to see how the edge would perform and it was also kinda grabby on the right side too. Very little irritation though.

for me this sounds like honing problem not beard prep or anything else.
How did you hone the razor , what stones were used etc.?

I used my two coticules and did a full dilution. The razors passes the HHT test well. I'm thinking maybe it's microchipping or something. That would explain why the first 50% of the shave was good and the other 50% lacked keeness and smoothness.

an easy way to find out is to look at the edge with a scope or a loupe and see what the difference is when the change occurs.

Yeah I thought about that, but I don't have a scope. Are fillys known for microchipping? I know some newer TI and Friodurs are known for doing that...

I had something similar with a LeGrelot. The double stabilizer was on the stone on one side and wasn't on the other. Result, one side (where the stabilizer didn't go on the stone) honing was even on the full length of the edge. Other side, only half the edge and the angle wasn't the same. I lost 2 days on that...

Interesting....I tried again last night after a quick touch up on water on the coticule and ended up with the same results...First half of the shave went great then the other side of my face was pretty brutal. How would you guys tackle this one?

No it's a NOS filly #13 with baby blue scales. The thing is in awesome condition. I already hone all of my razors with electric tape.

I'm thinking that using the unicot method as opposed to the dilucot method might help with this one. I probably won't have time to hone it before I get back from the christmas. I don't mind too much since I'm getting two other razors and a Kanayama 30k for christmas! :) :)

A good investment may be Veho004. Several of us have them and they really help with 400x magnification plus ypu can store snapshots for later comparisons or use it for other applications. In 40x you can use it for normal closeup pics with great detail from a couple feet away.

My guess is that your razor is not sharp enough. If so you can try starting the shave on the opposite side of your face.

The other thing might be the angle of the blade on your face.

I cannot see how a HHT passing razor can have microchips that are only an issue on one side of the blade.

Hi twoods,

Sounds like you have a wire edge; a bur that is bent to one side of the blade. When you shave with it it bends over or breaks off in places, making that rough feeling. If that's the case you will need to remove the bur and polish the blade a little to get it shaving nicely again. It's a quick thing to fix; very little honing would be necessary.

Cheers,
Jeff
