Razor burn/neck irritation

I am sure this has been done to death, but does anyone have any recommendations for neck irritation. I don't think I am getting it from shaving, but rather it has been so cold here all winter that my skin is just extremely dry right now. I generally seem to be fine when shaving, but then later that day or the next day I will get neck irritation BEFORE ever shaving. Maybe I just need a really heavy duty night cream? Are there any solid products that lessen the reddening? Thanks!

Welcome to B&B, this is the very best resource on the web for anyone who is getting into or back into wet shaving. Most of the issues that people experience who are new to wet shaving can be narrowed down to two factors: Lack of skin/beard preparation/moisturizing and the use of too much downward pressure as well as improper blade angle.

Almost everyone here has experienced what you are currently going through. I have found two articles that helped me a great deal and they were also passed on to my Father who at 78, returned to wet shaving this past summer. He agreed that they both contained a wealth of information and reminders that he remembers when he first used a safety razor.

First we have an article from the International Dermal Institute. And then we have an article from Modern Mechanix. I hope that both of these articles will be of some help. Take your time on your preps and concentrate on getting your beard softened in preparation for the blade. Then, use very little pressure while going with the grain (WTG) on your first few shaves or so. Also, learn to "map" your beard by examining your personal beard growth patterns.

Hang in there, you will do just fine.

Best of luck to you and welcome,

Frank

I have something similar. Shaving goes fine for the most part, but my freshly shaved skin is easily irritated by the collar of my coats and sweaters. I use regular nivea cream, which helps a lot.

I wash my face with cold water immediately after my final shaving pass. I leave my face wet and rub a Razor Rock Alum block over my face. I wait a couple of minutes and apply Nivea after shave lotion for sensitive skin. I have no problems from razor burn or itching.

I do the same but I rinse with cold water again after a couple of minutes (as long as it takes to clean my razor) to remove the alum, prior to applying the Nivea.

For me it was a very specific fix.
No More ATG passes on my lower neck.
Each pass in that area, i strictly go with the grain.
After about 2 weeks of that practice, there is no more irritation there.
And its really the first time ive seen my neck completely spot free.

With the usual good prep/lather/minimal pressure with good angle/practice and a razor/blade that worked well for me, I stopped having problems when I stuck to 2 north-to-south passes and didn't shave XTG or ATG on my neck. I generally use a little XTG on my jawline, but for my neck with its curves I stick to WTG only.

As another member has posted, comfort first and closeness second.
