Razor Bumps

I have just started using a shavette for the past 2 weeks. For some reason, which i hope someone can help me with: I keep getting razor bumps on my neck, specifically bellow my chin hair. I will start to bleed very little, and still have a few hairs i can feel with my fingers after im done shaving.

My setup is:

Majic razor from sallys(cheap razor to start with)
Derby blade
VDH soap
Secret shave oil (rub on face before shave)
VDH badger brush

If i dont shave ATG on my neck, i wont get a close shave, but at the same time i dont seem to be getting as close as i do on my cheek. Ive checked my angle, and it seems to be correct from much research.

Any suggestions would be a great help!

What's your prep like? I got some of those when I wasn't letting my lather sit for a little bit longer to soften the hair. Another thing is to figure out what blade works best for you.

Also, stretch the skin to make sure that the hair is being stood up to be cut easiest. Also, use less pressure. More passes is better than more pressure.

I haven't used derby blades, so I can't say this from my experience, but many people will say that the derby blades are crap and recommend getting a different blade.

And finally, Welcome to the forum!

My prep is: Shower with warm water before shaving. When its time to shave, i splash my face with warm water and work the shave secret in for a 2 min so it grabs on my hard to shave spots. I apply my lather and wait about a minute. I do stretch the skin when i shave. From the research i have been doing, i have read to try a more aggressive blade will help out major (feather,Astra SP). I am open to any suggestions!

Welcome to the forum! As mentioned, prep is very important and so are the blades as these may not be best for you, nor the razor for that matter.
You don't always need to get a BBS shave, especially on the neck or under your chin area. A close and comfortable shave will be more than enough and will prevent your irritation and bumps.
You may also want to get a good moisturizer. Good luck.

A few suggestions - prep is key.....and don't stretch the skin, as you can promote some ingrown hairs by doing that (your bumps could be a result of that). A "tend skin" type solution has helped me tremendously after finishing the routine (you can search B&B for an inexpensive home-made recipe) then make sure the skin is hydrated with a good lotion after shaving.

One other thought is to make sure you do a good wash, gentle exfoliation, and moisturization the night before - as, that has seemed to help me fight the bumps.

Hope this helps.

This....+3. A BBS shave is definitely not necessary on your neck! Going ATG is the biggest cause of irritation for most men in their neck area, myself included. I do two passes WTG and that gets rid of all visible hair there, even up close. I content myself with a BBS on my face when I want it (even on your face you don't always need a BBS shave. I'll take comfort over that anyday.) The suggestion of trying different blades and razor are good too but in my oppinion, your skin just may not like ATG passes in that area. Welcome and best of luck to you!

+1 I agree it may take a while to find the right blade for your technique and skin. I personally don't like the derby blades anymore after trying the Feather brand. Get a sampler pack to start.

Thank you all for your helpful responses, definitely have a different insight now. Makes sense to not have a BBS neck now that i think of it. I do want to try those feathers though, and Astra SP as well!
