Rare Razor

Picked this up at an auction recently. Ever seen one before? I haven,t shaved with it yet. The only info I have is that it was "Made in Austria"

There are lots of these Old Type travel razor clones that were made in either Germany or Austria, quality can vary, especially in the handles.

Any modern DE blade will fit, you just need to make sure the blade is centered properly with even exposure along both edges.

I'm fairly certain it isn't actually a Gillette, though it does closely resemble an Old type. I just picked one up at an antiques shop yesterday which is marked EMIR on the head. Not sure when they were made, but I believe most of them are from Solingen, Germany. They shave really well in my experience.

I came across another thread on here, sorry didn't save the link; it suggested that Gillette made a lot of these under various names for sale in Europe. Just a guess but maybe if they were for sale between the wars, they could sell better if they weren't apparently made it USA or UK. Well whatever, I'll be giving it a whirl tomorrow. I'm not a big collector but I'd like to have one decent open comb I can get along with; hope this is it.

I've got an Austrian one where the quality varied a bit too much. Blade exposure is incredibly uneven, and I'd never risk shaving with it. Neat design, though.

I have had two of these and kept one to use as a travel razor. The blade being centered is definitely an issue. Just pay attention when loading it. I love mine and get great shaves with it. :thumbup1:

These things are all over the place. I use mine all the time, and it shaves great! These seem to be mostly German made, but there are a lot of clones out there. Not much info can be found on them, but they are very good.
