was never able to attend, but always found the event to be newsworthy and launching point of so many photo gear innovations.

This is very sad news.
I remember years gone by where all the mags had plenty of new-product coverage from Photokina every time. Sorry to see it go.
Ha. The execs at my old company miss out on their bi-yearly junket to Germany. What a tragedy.
Those big trade shows are all paid for by the manufacturers, and are hideously expensive to put on. since most of them are haemorrhaging money right now, and laying off a lot of their staff, having those international show off events, that are really just about greasing the palms of the owners, CEO's and buyers from large camera store chains around the world, they could probably be seen as a bit.... wasteful.
In the time of the internet that kind of event is unnecessary. New products are announced via the web, and sales reps (if any still have a job) can be doing the rounds of the stores with a physical example of the product the very next day.
