Questions for PIF

I’ve been a member of B&B for about nine months now and in that time I have yet to notice the PIF of a pipe. I haven’t smoked a pipe in about 25 years and do not smoke at all anymore and I have several decent pipes sitting around that may as well be enjoyed by someone.
What are the general thoughts and concerns regarding passing along a used pipe? Would there be much interest? Would there be any “treatment” or disinfecting preferred before shipment or would the recipient prefer to take care of that? What features or conditions would be most important to describe? Would there be any issues with international shipping?

I would be interested, not sure about disinfecting and all that. Shipping is no problem to my knowledge.

I imagine there would be quite a few people interested, myself among them. It shouldn't be any problem for shipping, as it is not tobacco itself. As far as cleaning, I think it would be reasonable to leave it up to the recipient, although if you have knowledge in the area than it certainly couldn't hurt

I saw a couple pipe PIFs when I first started looking here, and people jumped on them. I don't expect interest has waned since then. I'm not sure about the disinfecting etiquette, but I would think whoever wins would do whatever they thought they needed to do to feel comfortable smoking it. If it was me, I'd probably wipe the bit on my jeans, but my dad was a farmer. :)

Don't smoke pipe but I don't recall that being a problem in the Never Ending PIF-PIF thread. I'm sure you'll get interest and good luck with the PIF.

If you want to clean them, you can run a pipe cleaner dipped in high proof alcohol down through the stem, and through the bowl, and then wipe the stem off with more alcohol just don't touch the finished briar with the alcohol.

I also don't see a problem passing on the pipes "As Is" and letting the recipient take care of the cleaning themselves. I know I always wipe down and clean any estate pipes I get even if they have be reconditioned.

Shipping would not be an issue, as a pipe does not come under the same regulations as tobacco.

I suspect that members are a bit gun shy about PIFs in this forum as some elements of smoking have considerably more regulation than others. The hardware, in this case, is pretty much unregulated so shipping shouldn't be an issue.

As to cleaning the pipes, I would ditch any used filters and run a pipe cleaner through the stem and neck of the pipe. Maybe give the bowl a good scraping. Beyond that, it's up to the recipient.
