Question re: home made pre-shave.

I like to use a pre-oil but I can't bring myself to spend $30 on a bottle when I could do the same at home.

My question is for those who have made their own.

As we know, oils have different densities. Grapeseed is pretty thin, castor and olive are midrange, almond a bit thicker etc.

Have you been able to blend oils of different densities or do they just separate again?

Thanks

I don't think you'd have a problem here, seeing as they're all hydrophic/lipophylic substances, they should provide a homogeneous mixture if they're in liquid form. Of course this is all just a hypothesis, but i've mixed olive oil with canola for food and it looks homogenous.

I have and mine is better than most. I also know whats in it:biggrin:. I looked at a lot of labels and I went nuts at Wholefood store. I did alot of test runs until I got the Blend just the way I like it. I ended up with a half gallon of pre-shave oil:w00t:. It makes great gifts:lol:. Do some research and keep notes. I only test on my human friends:001_rolle.

All Oils will blend. You can also add small amount of glycerin, but you must mix well. I have not had any separation and thats with warm storage.

Best of luck

thats one heck of a concoction.

may be a bit much for people who want a "cheaper" or "less laborious" option.

here is what i do.

2 parts olive oil
2 parts liquid vitamin E
1 part grape seed oil.

as far as scent goes...
get the essential oil of your choice. add a few drops at a time. mix and smell. continue until get the scent you are after.

i like a very light lavender.

Thanks Andy...

Zoinks!

Well if all that mixes together then I'm not going to worry about my concoction mixing well.

I was thinking:
2 Parts Home Health Almond Glow unscented (contains Peanut, almond, olive, lanolin, vitamin E)
1 Part Grapeseed,
1 Part Castor
dash of tea tree

... and call it done.

One more question for Andy Hopper, if I may.

I see you put clove oil in yours, and I see it in many of the brand name PSOs. What is the purpose? Also, do you find clove oil to be a skin irritant?

I frequently use the cosmetic database to get information of the ingredients in shaving products, but then again I'm struck by my profession - I'm a laboratory technician and generally curious about the ingredients in almost any product :w00t:

If however I search for "clove oil" in the above database this is what is returned http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/ingredient/726412/EUGENIA_CARYOPHYLLUS_(CLOVE)_OIL/

Of course it has to be the "Eugenia Caryophyllus", but as can be seen, this is restricted in the EU due to known allergenic effect.

I have a much easier solution and it works quite well for me. I jsut use Johnson's Baby Oil with Aloe Vera & Vitamin E. It is dirt cheap and I get a very smooth, comfortable shave. It is vastly superior to the AOS pre shave oil that is now collecting dust on my shelf. Try it before you try anything else!
