Question on reviews

Couple of questions, actually. I've lately stumbled back into the rabbit hole, and was wondering if the reviews on things I get are helpful and useful? If they are decent for folks, I'll be adding my thoughts to old review threads of the same pen, if there's something significantly different now compared to the old review.

Extra opinions on things are always welcome. Even if it confirms prior posts in the thread, it a) re-affirms the consensus and , b) brings an older post back into focus for us.

That was my hope. I'll just have to check the list of already reviewed stuff to see if I should addon to an old one, or create a new one.

Don't trust my opinion, Dustin. I'm a goombah and it takes 5 of us to equal one vote of the village idiot.

I believe most reviews here are honest & well intentioned But, please realize that these Reviews are the persons opinion. Razor Blades for example: what works for one guy might not work for you.

That is always the case, for sure. While I do my best to do pens and nibs as objectively as I can, there will always be some bias to any review written by anyone.

I think more reviews are always welcome on specific items. I trust the reviews on here more than what I would read on amazon because at least here I know that it is real people. As long as people are honest with their reviews I see no issue with adding in what you like or do not like about something even if it is just your personal opinion. We never know when someone is looking at things the exact same way as you.

Honesty is the key.

I have been asked to review inks and pens by manufacturers for posting on specialist sites and have refused on the basis that they wished to see the review before it is published, they would have the right to edit what I say, therefore an honest review would not be possible.

I have seen ink reviews elsewhere where the reviewer has been given the inks by the manufacturers, the review makes no mention of problems. People buy the product on the strength of the positive review but live to regret it as the ink causd such problems as permanent staining or blocking of the pen nib and feed. On enquiry to the manufacturer, these problems are acccepted but rejected by the reviewer.

In my view a more honest review would follow a product that has been bought by the reviewer.

Have no worries of any of that here with stuff I review. They are all things I personally bought for myself, and have no issues saying something is not worth the price, or what issues I have or find with it.

It would be good for us to know which manufacturers make such requests, so we could place a mental asterix beside any reviews of their products we see online.

Not entirely sure if it is the right thing to do to name the companies when I declined their offers.

I think that I can say that that the ink companies were UK based. One pen company also in the UK, the other based in Europe.

There is a UK Code of Conduct which applies to forum reviews or vlogs/blogs etc. some of which are little more than advertisements. That Code states that when the item being reviewed has been provided by the manufacturer, or you are paid to do the review, that the reviewer must state that free gift within their review, failure to do so can land the forum and or the reviewer in hot water.

As with any review, take them all with a grain of salt. I am more likely to place weight on negative or balanced reviews that point out cons or possible cons compared to the ones that are just 100% rave style ones, since almost no product is perfect for everyone. Like in regards to pens, a pen not posting can be a deal breaker for some, or it being on the thicker/heavier side a deal breaker for others. Good reviewers will keep that in mind and point out those possible drawbacks and such.
