Question for Thäter Brush Owners

Antique Hoosier

Specifically for owners of the style featured in the photo below. What is the heft of the handle like? Build quality and fit and finish of this brush? Curious...Thank you.

Mike, I have the ame brush in clear acrilic, in size "II" referred to on the different scent . De where I picked mine up, is called the chubby.

Fit, finish, loft backbone and tip softness is just awesome. Very dense and hands down the most luxurious brush I've got. Its like a cloud of a brush over the face.

Josh, with the close relationship that exists between Thater and Shavemac (and the prevailing opinion that Shavemac provides knots for Thater), how does the knot compare to the knots of Shavemac brushes?

I absolutely love my Thater.Do not worry about the quality because it is top notch.I have been using mine for 4-5 months and it has lost one hair.
Just go ahead and get.

Actually, people seem to be of the opinion that Shavemac provides the handles, not the knots, to Thater. I have read that Thater hand-ties their own knots, but who knows? Maybe I'll try an email. I have owned a Thater 4125/0 "Chubby" brush. It is a pretty decent brush. Very soft tips, and the handle is comfortable; however, I would recommend a larger brush if you have larger hands. The black handled ones, as the OP has posted about, have a handle that seemed a little on the light side to me. Fit and finish on these brushes can be kind of spotty from all the reviews I have read, mostly pertaining to the Thater lablel. Many compare the badger hair on these to Plisson Three-Band High Mountain White, but with a much more affordable price point.

this is more accurate. The rumor says that Thater gets handles from Shavemac. The knots are all Thater, and they are EXCEPTIONAL knots. Super soft tips, extremely dense, very backboned, and not a hint of scratch (although I know some people like the scratch). It's a fantastic brush. As for the handle, it's got a good weight to counterbalance the tips, but it is a touch on the small side (for me, at least... I have big hands) however, the ergonomics are exceptional, it's a very very comfortable handle, and the balance is excellent.

I love mine as well,and this description is very accurate...the finest quality,I ordered mine from thedifferentscent.de direct from germany because they were the only ones selling the ivory handles....upon asking I was also told these are NOT shavemac knots and absolutely "hand tied" by thater...I do not own,but have handled and inspected the plisson brushes in europe,some are over $500 usd...I simply can't see that they have better quality than thater,but perhaps the owners of these fine plissons are getting a better shave...I am 100% satisfied with thater

I have that particular brush, the 4125, and it has been excellent. As Josh mentioned, the build quality is excellent and the hair is incredibly soft. I find the hair to be a bit softer and more luxurious than my Shavemac. The knot is dense but it is not so dense that it hogs the lather.

Mike, if you want some pics of it, next to some other brushes, for size comparison, knot density, etc., let me know.

Thanks Chris. I believe my interest in this brush was purely speculative. Some of our German members have sported them in SOTD photos and my interest was aroused. Not to the point of actually placing one in a Vendor Cart for purchase however.

Knot is incredible. I sold off most of my brushes after I got this one. It's super soft and with enough backbone. I used to be really into crazy backbone brushes with tiny lofts, but I prefer this brush to all of those tiny brushes.
The handle is comfortable enough but I wish it was bigger and nicer for such a great knot. The finish on my handle is also starting to wear in some areas. Maybe someone will find a way to take these knots out and put them in a nicer handle...

Are the handles coated in some sort of lacquer and that's whats wearing off? Or are you talking about the labels, lettering and such?

As for re-handling, it is entirely possible; there are 2 crazies I know of pulling it off recently :tongue_sm: {here} and {here}

I would be interested to learn more about the relationship between Thater/Shavemac (who's making knots, who's making handles, etc). In either case, I believe the result is fairly unanimously considered excellent, soft brushes all around. I'd say go for it.
