Question for people in Detroit

If I was going to a concert at the DTE, where (area/suburb wise) would be the best place to stay? Also what would be the best way to get to and from the hotel? Are cabs/shuttles pretty easy to come by?

Thanks.

I grew up in Detroit, and DTE is FAR from downtown - Cabs from there would be out of the question. I would stay in Clarkston - it's VERY suburban, but close to DTE. Good luck with cabs in Clarkston, though - you probably wont find them.

By the way, Detroit is a great town. We like to maintain a dangerous image to keep tourists and the uninformed from spoiling our city.

Armored vehicle to and from would be a suggestion of mine.

Thats right, to stay safe bring a driver from Jersey and have them communicate the Jersey way ...

DTE is a ways north of downtown, depends on what you are looking for for the rest of the weekend or your stay. The band will probably stay in Birmingham at the Townsend, the casinos are downtown (or acrosss the border in Windsor), there are good restaurants scattered all around the town.

Feel free to PM me if you'd like Alex - another consideration is how you are arriving, driving or flying into DTW? Private jet into Oakland Airport?

Thanks for the reply. When I was doing research it didn't really look like much hotel-wise in Clarkson, I was thinking maybe Auburn Hills (The DTE doesn't seem too far from there).

garyg - I'd be driving in through Michigan from Northern Ontario and would probably be staying the weekend. Most likely I will be traveling with my wife and a friend of mine (who I would be attending the concert with) and would prefer to leave the car at the hotel for my wife's use while we're gone to the concert.

Clarkson is on the otherside of the world from me, but there probably aren't any "good" hotels. Auburn Hills is reasonably close to DTE, the Palace is there, I just am not familiar with those hotels. AH would be reasonably close to restaurant areas in B'Ham, Troy, Rochester Hills, Novi is a bit of a hike from that area.

I imagine there be stuff for my wife to do in AH while I'm gone all day to my concert, as opposed to other places.

Ok, so we've decided to go to a baseball game while we're there. What do I need to know?

As mentioned, Comerica Park is a fur piece from Auburn Hills - and is in almost downtown Detroit rather than the far exurbs. Plenty of good eateries & such in the area of the ballpark, and if you like giving your hard earned money away to strangers there is a casino right down the way (in fact, that is a good parking option). Probably could get a decent room at the casino & commute to DTE for the concert, and see some of downtown. What are your dates - there are a couple downtown events that are popular but that also may limit room availability? Still, if it is the summertime, before there are two major sports events (Tigers & Lions) potentially occuring downtown, I'd wager there would be deals available.

I understand they are quite a distance from each other we really weren't planning on going into Detroit to begin with. I'm heading down for the Mayhem Festival on July 22nd. We decided we were going to go down Friday and come back Monday and are planning on basically spending Saturday in Detroit, we want to go to the zoo during the day and then the baseball game that night.

No major events downtown that weekend, we have three casino hotels if that attracts you, the closest to the ballpark is Greektown, the zoo is back north in a suburb. Just depends on what you are looking for .. if closeness to the zoo is desired, then as I mentioned Birmingham is where the rock stars stay
