Question about the lovely TSA

I am going home on leave in the next month and want to take my safety razor. I know that the web site states that you may put a safety razor in your carry on with out the blade, but I'm wondering if anybody on here has ever done this and if they got heckled at the checkpoint. I would hate to loose the razor as it has been in my family for almost 50 yrs. I won't be taking a check in bag so that's not an option. Any insight would be fabulous.

My general rule regarding travel is not to take anything that I don't mind losing.
I suggest leaving that razor at home and using something else.

As for the TSA, I check all my baggage so I can't speak to that. Someone will be along shortly who can answer that question I'm sure. Please don't try to take any blades with you.

I have traveled often with a DE razor. The key is to not have blades in your carry on. If you do carry on the DE, its much easier to put it in the bags with you liquids because they will search it out. But I've never had one taken away. I wouldn't rely on this, but often as soon as I tell them there's no blade in it they tend not to inspect it further. Get blades at the other end, send them ahead of you, or put blades in your checked bags.

I would never take anything that resembled something sharp through TSA. Little lone an actual razor blade. I couldn't imagine the crap storm that it would create lol.

Personally, I feel that the least amount of conversation I have with TSA the better. I travel frequently for work and my goal is always to pass through with nothing more than a mutual "thank you". Even if you are right, do you really want to put yourself in the position of having to agrue with a TSA agent in order to not lose something valuable? I bought a Gillette Guard and a few cartridges from West Coast Shaving which I use as my travel razor. It is light and I don't mind losing a few blades if someone has a problem.

Get you some of the cheap single/double edge plastic razors at the Grocery store. They work, and you just throw them away, so no worries.

I've never had any trouble, but my fiance has. If it was me, I would disassemble it as much as I could, make sure to pack it with a brush or something else shaving-related, and print out the policy saying you can bring the razor but no blade. I think that my disassembled 3-piece (vs. his TTO) has contributed to why I've never run into any trouble.

Disassembled or opened and placed in the bin with my coins and belt, never had a problem.
Closed up in my dopp kit, about 25% of the time they pull it aside to check for a blade.

The family heirloom stays home. End of story. :001_cool:

Surely you can shave with a cartridge razor, or a disposable for a few days, so as to not risk losing your treasured razor. :biggrin1:

I personally, wouldn't want the potential harassment of carrying a DE razor, so I would pack a Gillette Trac II from the get go. It would give me a DFS in two passes, with little to no fuss.

I would just make sure it's got no blade and print out the paperwork stating that you can take it onboard and you'll be fine. Or use this as n excuse to buy another DE and keep it as a travel razor

I always take a DE in my carry on when travelling and have never had a problem. I never takes blades and always put the razor in with the bag with liquids so they dont even need to look for it.

I HATE cartridge systems. I travel with a DE and blades but I check them both. I'm able to expense the baggage fee so I don't mind.

I had inadvertently left a few DE blades in my carry-on briefcase that I had received from B&B trades and those blades went through the x-ray SEVERAL times without TSA noticing. I discovered the presence of the blades during a regular re-organization of my briefcase and realized that they had made it past TSA more times than I could count.

DO NOT TRY HIDING THE BLADES. Not only could it result in TSA distrupting your travel, but it will unecessarily slow down the process for your fellow travelers as well.

I travel with my DE in my carry on all the time. (no blades), never had a problem. Sometimes they check it for blades, and then I move on.

+1. This is really about avoiding theft of you razor, not TSA issues (which can be easily remedied). If you want to stick with DE, grab another inexpensive one to travel with. If not, do some other cartridge solution or some such.

I only travel with items that I can shrug off if lost, stolen or confiscated.

when i went to florida, TSA let me keep my razor, but made me hand over every one of my blades. when i put the luggage in check in, no problem at all, even internationally had no problems going to brazil when i checked the bag. i don't take my vintage razors with me, i bring my trusty flying eagle from china in the nice little orange tin. $4 well spent.
