Question about Taylor of Old Bond Street cream I just received

G

I'm sorry if this question has already been answered, but I did some searching around and couldn't find anything. I had a big stash of TOBS shaving cream tubs that finally ran out, so I ordered some more online. But I had to order from a new place that I never used before because my usual source was out of stock on the scent I use. The new tubs I received today had five things about them that surprised me, and I'm just wondering if these things are normal now because I haven't ordered from this place before and I'm trying to make sure the product is legit. The fact that TOBS has evidently changed their formulations since the last time I ordered tubs (it really was quite a while back) makes it difficult for me to verify legitimacy by texture or scent. So I thought maybe someone here could help me out.

1) The label on the lid was a sticker instead of screen printed like my old ones. From searching around I have learned this is a real change and is the way the lids are done now.

2) The ingredients list is on a round sticker on the bottom of the tub instead of a rectangular sticker on the side of the tub like my old ones.

3) My old tubs had a little 3D/relief logo for TOBS on the bottom of the tub, but these new ones are flat on the bottom (where the ingredient sticker is now placed).

4) The plastic cover that goes in between the lid on the tub seems to be quite a bit thicker than on my old tubs, and it seems like it is meant to stay situated inside the lid, whereas the old ones were very thin and I just threw them away because they didn't stay inside the lid at all.

5) The tub does not have a plastic transparent liner on the inside that you can remove like my old ones did. The cream is sitting directly in the light tan plastic tub itself.

If anyone can help me verify that this is legit, or let me know otherwise if not, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

I just ordered my first tub 'o TOBS, and it came exactly as you've described.

I threw the inner lid out on the theory it'd be just one more thing to fiddle with.

Sorry for the long quote, but it is so I can refer to in order to make a reply.
Just received a tub of TOBS Sandalwood from QED about three weeks ago. The top was pre-printed like before, and the list of ingredients was a retangular decal on the side. The bottom of the tub is more-or-less flat (may be a plastic ring) with nothing printed, embossed or otherwise on it. I do not think that there was an inner liner or transparent liner on top of the cream, but I really didn't take note at the time. If the tubs have changed, I imagine what you get depends on what the distributor has in stock at the time of fulfilling the order.

I would have a hard time believing that someone would go to the effort of forging TOBS. I mean the stuff is not that valuable/expensive, is it?

I'd say that as long as you purchased it from a known retailer, the chances of it being fake are slim. It's not like an expensive watch or pen: I believe Taylor's is the most modestly priced of the English creams.

I just bought a tub of TOBS a couple of weeks ago and it was still packaged the old way. Maybe I got a tub that was sitting around a while?

Sounds like it depends on where you buy them. Some stores probably have old stock remaining. I can tell you that all of the tubs I've recently purchased are in this new fashion. The newest tub is paraben free and has Taylor of Old Bond Street in raised letters on the side.
