I really like the stainless gems.
My first SE shaves were with carbon steel PAL's, which were good, but got dull so fast after getting wet, I could often only get one shave out of them.

+1!

Go with the stainless; especially the Pella PTFE-coated blades. I bought a box of 100 awhile back as part of a B&B group buy and can't be happier. I should have bought more.

Hope you enjoy your SE sojourn. You might also want to buy a GEM 1912 Damaskeene. I don't own the same razor you have, but my Damaskeene is my favorite as compared to the regular 1912, Ever-Ready 1914 and Model 1924 "Shovelhead" razors that I do own.

Let the SE RAD begin!

Stainless Gems are very easy to find at Walgreens so probably would be easier to start there. I think they have carbon steel blades at cvs or rite aid but they are carbon steel so will rust if you don't dry them thoroughly after use.

treets from rite aid are my fav blades, then gems from walgreens. the treets are carbon steel and will look very strange with black oxidation splotches after the first shave, they are fine.. just keep your blades dry, i keep in a clothes drawer, certainly not in the humid bathroom.

no they arent exp, you can get many many shaves per blade, keep them dry, rub blade with a lil baby oil on the blade btwn shaves and palm strop before each shave.

SE is beyond addiction.......you thought DE was fun, SE is the way to go.
enjoy!

Correct on both points, willyb!!

I have found the Treets to be smoother on my face than the Gems. You won't get as many shaves from the Treets, but that is the trade-off between carbon steel and stainless.

Yes, they are more expensive than most DE blades . . . but still a whole lot better than buying modern Gillette or Schick carts!!

The ASR-made PFTE-coated medical blades from Ted Pella are less expensive on a per-blade basis . . . but require buying a much larger quantity. While I have not personally tried that blade, many here rave about how good they are!

The Treets and other carbon steel blades are likely to be slightly sharper than the stainless steel blades the first couple of times that you use them. However, they require more maintenance to maintain their edge and sharpness. I prefer the stainless versions, because they are easier to deal with, which you can find at Walgreens if you don't want to buy in bulk.

As a SE "fan boy" I can tell you truer words have never been spoken!
