Question about honing just a portion of an edge

Hi Gents,

I've been working on a razor, and last night I made some really nice progress. If I use SWMBO's thin hair, the majority of the blade is performing really well on HHT. However, there's a small portion near the heel that isn't quite as sharp as the rest of the blade. If I use something thicker like mine, the heel pops the hair pretty nicely. How do I go about working just that portion of the blade without negating the work I did on the rest of the edge? Would heel-leading strokes work better? Toe-leading? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Don

Hello Don
When you do not need to work on the whole length because some or most of it is about where you want it you can focus on just a portion using a technique of mine I call the "finger pointing stroke". Basically your initial sharpening stroke left behind a portion as the major areas of the edge progressed nicely, so you are on the right track. Here is a video of mine and at minute 6 you will see this finger pointing stroke.

Good Luck, Alx

This happens to me a lot through the many wonderful ebay surprises. I'll also give it a try!

Ya, it dosn't mean that your technique is wrong or your bevel is not fully set but more like a quirk that just a portion of the bevel is not fully there. Stropping might solve it also but since you got the stone right there going back to just that portion of the blade is easy and fulfilling.

I would get over the weirdness and just shave with it. If there was something 'off' in the shave that bothered me - I'd probably take the edge to a mid-range stone and then refinish.
